Really? I saw this last night and thought about his wife. Who is firmly entrenched in the Gothard life of popping out babies, keeping yourself covered so men don't have evil thoughts, and being subservient to your husband. Who may be having sex with multiple women while his wife is home washing diapers.

I thought about the fact she has no education, no skills, had never had a job and is married to a man who molested his siblings and the babysitter. I thought about the fact she is in her mid-20's and has four children who will grow up knowing their father is a molester and who will be immersed in all the idiotic things Gothardism teaches and the cycle will probably repeat.

Never once did I think about seeing you squirm. Not once. You are nowhere near as important as a woman whose world just fell apart. Again.

But I agree, it is a bit vague.
Even Mom's vague reference to "the news stories" is deflective. It's like if some fan reads this and isn't appraised of the actual "stories" referred to, they won't dig too deeply and certainly won't find anything out from Mom.

Most likely; at this point it would not be much of an additional or surprising revelation either.

He certainly can be renewed and forgiven if he turns away from sexual sin and stays faithful to his wife and God. However, that is going to take a massive amount of effort and time for anyone to trust this guy since part of his exposed sin was that he showed himself to be a liar. A quick apology after the fact won't cut it.

Good to see your priorities straight then, I guess.

I do not consider this an admission of guilt in the Ashley Madison matter; apparently there are allegations of him viewing Internet porn that are separate?? Either that or he's doing the equivalent of Bill Clinton's "I didn't inhale" claim: he's claiming he had a profile just to fantasize about being with other women, rather than actually meeting them.

Since fundamentalist thought is that "lusting after a woman is the same as committing adultery" then his admission of being "unfaithful" to his wife merely by viewing pornography would be understandable. But claiming his Ashely Madison account was solely to flirt or fantasize about being unfaithful strikes me as a facile denial and an attempt to minimize the significance or extent of his transgression. If he had simply wanted to imagine sex with other women he could have visited an actual pornography site. That would be generally cheaper and certainly easier and less risky than an Ashley Madison membership. No, if he was on A-M and is admitting to being on A-M then recasting it as a "porn addiction" to make it less disgusting and more relatable, is spin control. Even if he didn't actually meet women he was mentally and emotionally unfaithful to his marriage vows and he shouldn't be using the words "porn" and "addiction". This isn't an addiction or a compulsion, it's a moral failure. It is even a moral failure to me, an atheist with naught but common human decency and rational self interest to define my morality.

I have a huge problem that he didn't admit to an Ashley Madison account specifically and that he's attempting to re-cast it as a porn addiction, if that is in fact what he's responding to and not to some separate revelation that he was into outright porn as well.
I have a huge problem with him blaming his porn habit on Satan, so much for accountability.

The overarching question I have: Is this a failure of Josh, or of his upbringing?

The "courting" process the family has is extremely nontraditional. I can't speak for everyone, but I know for me, spending 11 days with my girlfriend on vacation by ourselves brought a lot of things up and situations that we wouldn't have had during our normal dating here at home. At the end, it actually brought us closer together -- but I know from other friend's experience, this alone time ended up making one of the parties realize that they weren't right for each other.

The fact that the Duggar's have every date chaperoned makes me wonder if the couple can really get to know each other. I've been a third wheel and have had third wheels on a number of dates. The couple always act differently than when alone. It's entirely possible that this "no touching, no kissing, no alone time" until married causes the couple to get married sooner than they should and to not discover potential issues in the relationship further on.

Just my 2c on that, I guess.

I just ran across this; apparently, the Duggars are attempting to make lemonade out of lemons by creating a documentary on sexual abuse and pitching a related new reality show where they would counsel victims of sexual abuse.

As Patheos termed it: "A cluster-bomb of irony, chutzpah, and malpractice."

His upbringing, IMO, cannot possibly produce an emotionally and sexually well-adjusted adult. The entire world of "Gothardism" is so unnatural that I am not surprised one bit by what has happened with Josh.
