Could also be simply because they tend to be not very bright, so they don't really understand anything as well as more intelligent people would. I wish the poll had also asked people how much they knew about a wide variety of other things besides religion - politics, history, science, etc. I'd be curious to see how the religious stacked up in terms of general knowledge.
Some may know more as humanist oppose anyone attending any religious meeting and would like to close down all religion , but still atheist people fail in have convictions which would draw them to being converted to Religion , and most would fail in knowledge of the Art of Christ and it working through the Spirit ...... Other that all the people who come to this forum who have read many post and have learn many things along the way
I sure hope the questions they asked were not all like the ones in the test on that website. They are a joke; I cannot imagine somebody scoring less than 12 and even all 15 is real easy. I knew most of these answers by the time I was in 9th grade. Then again, I belong to a group that is not atheist but still scored high.
Only 36% know that a school can offer a comperative religion course. That really shocked me.
Contentious thread. Matt Dillahunty hit the nail on the head - as he does repeatedly - when he said that he didn't get smarter when he became an atheist - he just got better informed.
I suggest that those who identify as atheist came to realize they were because they studied the Bible more - and pretty frequently (so I read in conversions stories) in order to believe better and refute disbelievers more effectively and found that the book made no sense.
They ended up as atheists because they now knew more about the Bible than they did before.
According to the article, protestant Christians knew the most about Christianity, while athiests/agnostics and Jews and Mormons scored the highest overall (last I checked, Jews and Mormons fell into the 'believers' category). Jews did slightly better in regards to world religons, while athiests and agnostics did slightly better on the topic of religion in public life.
As for why, the literature on the subject points to education- formal and informal, religious and secular. Those who attended college, as well as those who discussed relgion regularly with others, tended to score higher overall than those who did not.
Many schools "could" teach about comparative religion, just like they "could" teach about Marxism.
I guess I was lucky that my school actually did teach me abour Marxism, Socialism, Communism and all that. The majority of people is greatly confused when it comes to those terms. Very sad.
Same goes for comperative religion class. As I said, I knew most of what they asked in this study by the end of 9th grade.
