If I get hurt, I cannot blame anyone else because I make a choice of relating to someone who puts me below his/her faith.

Having said that, Christians also need to understand that people like me value love and friendship above religious beliefs. To us, beliefs come and go, but emotion and feelings from a relationship last for a long time. A lot of Christians don't seem to understand this. They are so concerned about proselytizing me and others that they are willing to get close to us through friendship and use that friendship to convert us. I find that unacceptable even though their intention may not be bad.

In this story, Routson's first colleague probably knew about his fundamentalist belief, yet she accepted his friend invitation. She should be thick-skinned enough to deal with his recommendation.

By the same token, this man knew that being lesbian is a critical part of his colleague, and yet he befriended her just to get his beliefs across. He knew that how hurtful his recommendation was to his "friend", but he still did it. A true friend wouldn't do this.
You make some good points. Personally as a Christian, I would not have done what this fellow did. The old saying "People don't care what you know until they know that you care" is very true. I don't avoid gay people, but I also do not try to "convert" them. If they ever decide to listen to God, He is more than capable of handling that job.

This article is ludicrous.

I actually watched it today (30 minutes, but I couldn't stand anymore) and can definitely see why she complained to her manager. The movie is not the least bit accepting.

Why Audacity Is A Terrible Movie, And How To Really Reach Out to Gays

It basically converts gays into nothing more than someone to save. No wonder she was appalled.

Oh yea. And the entire movie I saw was nothing but imposed opinions. As in someone would say something that was obviously offensive and the characters kept saying crap like "I'm glad you've been so sweet/welcoming to me." They pull that trick in advertising. X argument would naturally lead to X opinion, but the spokespeople say stuff "can't you see how great X is?" trying to push you to the opposite opinion. There's an obviously anti-gay poller asking opinions and leading them to anti-gay ones, but they count on the fact that nobody examines those questions, and relies on character reactions to convince you that they are pro-gay.

We can be good neighbors if our destinies put you and me in that situation.

She has every right to be offended. However, she knew he was a fundamentalist. She shouldn't have accepted his friend invitation.

I keep my guard very high with religious people. As soon as I hear such statements as "Jesus' blood is a ransom for humanity", "We were born in sinful state", "Do you know that your religion will lead you to damnation?", I know that it is time for me to turn from friendliness to politeness and distance myself from that person. None of us endorse political correctness, do we?

If this man recommended a movie that is offensive to his colleagues, they could have told him that they had no interest, or they could be more direct by telling him to leave them alone.

Blaming the person for accepting his friend request doesn't work. She is not to blame for this guy being unable to control himself. We also don't know the full situation, as we have only gotten his side, which forgive me, I don't believe. I would bet my left nut that there was more to it than simply saying, "Hey, you should check this movie out."

I also keep my guard high when it comes to religious people. I used to work a job where I had to visit churches just about every day. Every day that I had to I heard the same sort of things.

"Where Do you go to church?"

Me: "Nowhere at the moment."

"Why not? You know without Jesus your savior you are going to hell"

Me: "So, about this delivery..."

I just tried my best to ignore or evade any questions, simply because I didn't want an issue caused with my job. The owner of the place I worked was a devout Catholic, and had fired a guy previously because he couldn't get along with the church crowd. So you have these Christians claiming persecution, yet this guy was fired because he told a lady to stop bugging him about not going to church... Christians are worse than atheist/gays/agnostics/Wiccan/etc, could ever be.

I bet that if we could see his personnel file, we would see that he has been warned about his behavior before.

He said he likes to share the gospel with every new person he meets.

I'll bet any money that every time a new employee walked through the door, he was all over them "sharing the gospel".

I think there have been numerous complaints over the years, his employer was sick of it and said good riddance.

To tell the truth, I am very suspicious of the friending since it was a Lesbian. It is more than possible that he saw himself as **the** man to **cure** her with his loving ways.

Exactly! I seriously doubt this was the first time. Even if it was, he was told to stop by his boss, and instead, decided to ignore the warning, and continued to do it. That is the reason he was fired. He decided insubordination was okay, and got called on it.

Sorry that you had to go through such trauma. I am so grateful that I immigrated to California, where Christians know when I say "please leave me alone" they have to leave me alone.

I don't blame the victim in this story. I, just like you, don't really know the full story. Assuming what is presented in the article is true, the lesbian colleagues should take their own responsibilities just like the man. I'm pretty sure that they knew just as much as you and I do that what makes a fundamentalist Christian fundamentalist.

When I came to California in 2003, I had no idea who was an evangelical Christian, who was a moderate Christian, who was a cultural Christian. After some unpleasant experience dealing with Christian fundamentalists, I have developed my resilience. I know what I am getting into if I choose to involve with those people. I am sure that people in Ohio know Christians better than I do. After all, it is a midwestern state, where Christians thrive. Both of these colleagues seemed to engage in a conversation with this man without showing their discomfort. Unless it was not a fact, they should have been able to deal with this circumstance.
