Yet more than a few religions do have tenets that require the faithful to reject unfaithful members, even if they are family. That cults do so is beyond question. The Amish and Mennonites are famous for shunning unfaithful members.
Not all Amish shun. There are numerous affiliations (sects) within Amish and it depends on how conservative the sect is. Sects have split and new affiliations created because of disagreements about shunning.

Regardless, some do. It was not my point to list any and all religions that do or don't shun, but to show that requiring a person to put their faith above family is a common component of a number of faiths.
If she can make it to upstate NY I'll hook her up with work and a place to stay. In no time flat she won't need anything from anyone. And there are two very excellent colleges (Vassar and Marist) right here in town that she could attend and get a great education to establish her future.
There are a LOT of misconceptions about the Amish. (Just as there are about the LDS ). As is illustrated in this thread. Most of the misconceptions are because they isolate themselves from the world. Which they do so they can serve God. When they shun it is not because they put their faith above family. It is because they believe the person leaving has chosen the world over God.

Yeah I've found impassioned atheists often times have replaced a family religion with their new 'belief' and they treat it that way.
Can you find a news article or other type of evidence where atheist parents have shunned a child for deciding to join a religion? I would probably chuckle a bit at first if my child decided to go that route but of course I would never shun them. Everyone takes their own path in life and I would see it as an expression of one's individuality. I would encourage them actually to pursue whatever they thought would bring them happiness because I would want my child to be happy above everything else. Now if they developed bigoted and judgmental mindsets, which so many religions espouse, and inflicted those on other family members, that may be a cause for concern and discussion but never cause for disowning.

Exactly.
I'm glad my kids are atheist also, but I would love them just as much and feel just as strongly about them if they decided to attend some religious organization on a regular basis, except Scientology or my daughter, Islam. Other than that, whatever makes them happy and not stupid.
I think it's pretty disgusting how these parents are treating their teenage daughter. How cheap her life must be to them. Why would you worship a deity that mandates that you cut off your own blood if the circumstances require it? Isn't a child supposed to be a gift from "GOD"? Did this child deserve be born into such a horrible family? I think this story says a whole lot more about their "GOD" than it does about people and should really make people take a long and hard look at religion and its capacity to utterly destroy and rip apart families.
