Dear Christian God,

Please kill me in a fiery car wreck on the way home from work this evening.

In Jesus's name I pray,

Amen.

Has my risk of a car accident increased because of my prayer?

If God wants that to happen, sure.

Has the probability of God making it happen increased?

No. I don't believe so. God is in control. You won't twist God's arm and force him to do anything.

And yet you pray. No?

Then what's the point of prayer again?

While most Christians are praying not to get stuck in a traffic jam during their rush hour commute, the odds are good that you will make it home safely. None of the above prayers will be answered. Maybe you'll have better luck praying St Christopher, as he is patron saint of travelers. Happy motoring!

I do pray. For one, I pray because God commands it. I talk to God for the same reason I talk to my wife -- to build relationship.

To be honest, I'm not really sure how it all works. He knows we will pray, but he answers our prayers, but he is immutable--meaning unchanging.

That's a little creepy. I stopped building relationships with imaginary friends when I was still a little kid.

Prayer doesn't work, according to you. When I asked you if a prayer for a specific outcome would actually increase the likelihood of said outcome, you said no.

So there it is, right from the horse's mouth. Prayer doesn't work.

Me, too.

Of course it does. I've seen it work. I have grown in faith, and I've seen God respond to things we've prayed about.

Maybe it means that God ordained that I would pray.
