But the specifics are irrelevant. I know that it's a typical thing here to get bogged down in the weeds and people would rather hijack the thread off course and not actually answer the OP...but again.....who or what group it is really is not relevant.

Maybe because they were raised in a culture which DRILLED into their heads that they were Christians?
Most people believe in God. And, on a similar note, most people are raised to believe in the biblical god as being the true God. They are also told that Jesus was his son.
But when they get a little older, suddenly they are being told some very disturbing things about God and Jesus: Christian dogma.
QUESTION: What other options do they have at that point? What would you like for them to do if they can't accept the disturbing dogma?
