Man believes and worships a supreme being who he calls god. The supreme being may be more than one, like the Hindus. But of all these gods there must be only one true God (John 17:3) and all the others are false gods. If there is a true God, there must be false gods. How then can he determine whether the god he believes in or worships is the true God or a false god? What are the attributes of god that man considers as those a true God should possess?
If you were to worship a god, be sure that He is the true God.
Are we just contented to believe in a god that was introduced to us by our parents? Or do we just believe that all these gods are one and the same?
The question itself is confused. If one is a polytheist, there is no concept of a "one true god". There is, at best, a "one true pantheon", but in practice, polytheists don't generally have that "my way or the highway" defensiveness that we've grown all to accustomed to in monotheism. Hindus have thousands of "gods", each family has its adopted god(s), and yet has no problem respecting the different family god(s) of another household when visiting.
As you inadvertently admit by quoting the NT (John 17:3), the concept of a One True God comes from Christian theology anyway (among others, like Islam).
The way in practice that one "determines" what gods are false or real is to pick a religion, then declare all other religion's gods to be false.

How does anyone know here is just ONE (version or image) god let alone if that god is true?
True God? A book of stories defines God and people choose to believe. Since no one to my knowledge has ever met God (unless you believe George Burns was God), who or whatever you believe in is YOUR true God.
The purpose of the thread is not to judge the one true God, but to identify him first.
The point to which BF was responding is that a better question is whether the God you are identifying is worthy of devotion. Feel free to use that as a criterion for choosing what may be real.
Why not? All the christian apologists do - every time they try to excuse God his misdeeds and blame man or Satan or God having to toe the line of human conventions of the time.
When you do that, you are judging God according to humanist moral codes and deciding 'The God I believe in could not be like that". Who are you to judge?

It seems to be a different question, since some atheist spokesbods have saidf that, even if biblegod was proven to be real, they wouldn't worship it unless it was a very different kind of critter from the incompetent thug described in the bible.
