No simpler life is assumed. The hypotheses behind abiogenesis theory is that the first cells were preceded by a long period of chemical evolution. Various possible mechanisms have been suggested, but none so far have clearly stood out as supported by the evidence. Progress continues to be made, however. For instance this just came out yesterday: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080318212430.htm, and this came out last week: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080313095623.htm.

Dawkins made a comparison between the 2 as cranes.

Its a fact that simple organic molecules can form more complex ones though anabolic reactions(ie ones that require energy). The energy from this might come from say UV light or from being in warm places such as near a volcano. From there we can get a replicator and eventually RNA followed by DNA.

This case it would be like a crane being built by a smaller crane which in turn was made by an even smaller crane, all the way down to a point where the crane is so simple that it could have come about on its own given the right conditions.

With god however it is not the same, adding this extra variable just raises more questions than it answers. Instead of being a crane it is a sky-hook.

Let's not forget that most Christians aren't creationists, and in the US most evolutionists are Christians.

I questioned this a lot in my classes, and at one point I found it impossible to believe. I told the nun I did not believe in God and she told me I was going to Hell. Needless to say there were no more bible classes after that discussion.
Sorry you struggle with this. I believe the Bible is God's Word and I believe what it says, this included. I don't understand it all, but I believe it, so for I guess the answer for me is God did it, period.

and this is why you will find yourself defending things like gods commands to murder and rape.

The Bible does not need defending

Spoken like someone who doesn't realize it is quite simple to solve a Rubik's cube without looking at it.
