First of all, I despise the fleecing of the flock that Osteen does every week. I do not endorse him, or in any way suggest that he represents Christianity. He is a shyster.

Having said that, don't you smile for pictures? Osteen is a businessman. He sells a product. That product goes over better if the one presenting looks acceptable to the one buying it. A smile usually helps that.

He's not "selling" a belief in a fear based system. Joel leaves people to take him or leave him as they prefer, and he doesn't feel a need to change anyone. I respect him greatly.
He's selling himself---his job is to get you to send him money. To do that, he makes empty promises that God just loves his listeners and wants them to be healthy, wealthy, and wise (no matter who they are, what they believe, or what they've done). And the gullible eat it up.

If they frown, people complain.

If they grin, people complain.

Maybe we need to ask why people nitpick at irrelevant stuff...

Why do people look at one person or sect and think it representative of an entire faith?

They've always done it. They did it when I was in the faith. It's one of the reasons I grew weary of being in the faith; there were always people drawing overdetermined and stereotypical conclusions, sure, but also, there were plenty of idiots to prove the point. I was not intellectually dishonest enough to claim to be part of a major world religion when it suited my purposes, and then disown half the people in that "big tent" because they were flamin' idiots. Beyond a certain point, it becomes a case of "the lady doth protest too much".

They are thinking of all the things they will buy with the money they are getting from the sheep.

Thank you. I don't of course blame Christians for Osteen and his very profitable religious business (not to say, scam (1). Nor do I think he represents Christianity.

And, yes; someone selling a product will smile, though in my time I have encountered the bullying and intimidating salesperson.

There is the political grin, of course. But I just gad to mention the huge Persuasive grin which is something else and shouts "This person is selling you a crock, and he knows it".

Your'e right of course. This thread, while a mildly interesting and amusing discussion, is not really relevant to the debate about whether Christianity is true or even whether it is Good for us.

(1) Btw, anyone know whether they put Creflo in Jail yet>
