The objective is a poll that will hopefully illustrate respondents' feelings about whether they have a higher power. I should have included a 4th option "I don't understand what is meant by HIGHER POWER"

Well you could just have defined it in advance, then people could respond to your definition.

In any case if a term is ill-defined then I by definition don't say I believe in it, pending further clarification.

I believe for example in "higher power" as defined by 12-step programs (something larger than yourself) but even there, a lot of people automatically equate that with an actual deity (including many 12-step group leaders), so I'd be reluctant to subscribe to it for that reason. "Something greater than yourself" is simply an external purpose in which you find meaning, such as being a good spouse or parent or sibling or friend or supporting a cause you care about, or working for an organization whose purposes align with yours, or perhaps just working for a personal abstract goal like "building a log cabin in the wilderness and living by myself off the land". "Believing in god" or "participating in a religion" is just one possible configuration of this, but it's a popular one, and so ... to say as an atheist that I "believe in a higher power" is just an invitation to reinforce the typical theist stereotype of "atheists are rebellious / confused / don't understand and might be reconverted with the right sort of appeal, because see, deep down inside he DOES believe in god".

Believe me, we atheists find this sort of conflation to be VERY tiresome, so no thank you, I at least am not going to say I believe in a "higher power" even if in my understanding of the concept it doesn't have to have anything whatsoever to do with any deities.
