I don't know if this belongs in Controversies or Religion but I'll
post it here.

Disclaimer: I am an Atheist, been to evilbible.com, the whole
shebang, but this question has been
haunting me well before I gave up my Christian faith. Even though I no
longer Christian, I am going to
write the next couple paragraphs as if I was still a believer.

For a long time, I felt like something at one point caused what was
once a benevolent god to just flip
out and begin doing some truly horrific, crazy, and some downright
bizarre things and engage in some
very strange behavior. I am not talking about "because Adam and Eve
ate the apple" or "a third of God's
children went with Satan in the first Earth Age", because those were
actually 'tests' Yahweh created himself
to put man through. I put tests in quotes because the one with the
apple was clearly rigged (2 adults
with infantile minds being challenged by an extremely powerful
mastermind in the garden), and it's
possible the first one was rigged. I am talking about a change that
likely happened well before
creation itself.

Just imagine: You are forced to live forever. You can never die, you
can't commit suicide. You have
unlimited supernatural power. OK, great. You can create whole
universes, live a whole Star Trek
holodeck existence if you choose, do anything, except of course cease to exist.

Trillions upon trillions of years pass. You created everything far
beyond imagination, except sentient life,
you destroyed and rebuilt the universe a few thousand times already,
you literally have done everything possible and more. Except cease to
exist. You are getting bored, and you have run out of ideas after
expending a near infinite supply of ideas. About 100 trillion more
years pass, and now you are done with life,
exhausted, you are done, done, done, you are ready to shut all your
consciousness down forever.
Except you can't, because suicide is impossible for you. You start
going mad. With all of the sentient life you
created this time around, you want to do the right thing, you want
your creatures to be happy and
content, but at the same time, you are fighting your destructive
impulses you held back for so long.
Your impulses want you to create a world full of carnage, war,
unimaginable barbarity, and above all,
craziness and unpredictability, both by it and by you, but you fight
it every second you are awake. Finally it gets to the point where your
destructive side is about
to overwhelm you. You need some kind of release valve, anything.

OK, I will create tests for my creatures, to see whether the deserve a
good existence, or a bad
one. This helps to hold back your destructive side, because it knows
it has a possibility of winning,
and is not so desperate to convert you to the dark side.

Man and angels, and even Satan/Lucifer is put through these tests.
Though not mentioned in any
religious texts, all these parties keep passing the tests, without
fail! The destructive impulses in Yahweh
are once again growing strong, hammering at him harder and harder.
Yahweh is still fighting, and puts
man and angels through more tests, but they keep passing them. Yahweh
can no longer fully
hold back these impulses, but in one desperate push back against them,
he decides to rig the
test a bit where a third of mankind ultimately chooses Satan as their
god instead of him. This
is the final crack in a weakened leaking dam which has enormous
pressure behind it.
FINALLY, I CAN CUT LOOSE! Yahweh exclaims to himself. Now he can be as
crazy, destructive, and
down right evil as he wants to be. He can say he is loving and at the
same time threaten
to send his "children" to an eternity of physical and mental torment,
all while claiming he is pure.
This change to the dark side isn't 100 percent complete, but it's
almost there. Maybe in in a peak
of sanity, of trying to get his benevolent side back, Yahweh created
the garden test, but as I
said earlier, it was clearly rigged. Could Yahweh have developed
multiple personalities, maybe kind
of like Harvey Dent/Two Face? The test was Yahweh's good side trying
what he could to pull
himself out of the abyss of sanity, but his bad side sabotaged it so
Adam and Eve would lose for sure
(this reminds me of the Batman: The Animated Series episode where
Harvey Dent/Two Face developed
a third split personality called "The Judge", which at one point tried
to kill Two Face/himself!), and when
they did lose, that was it, and this is how things got the way they are today.

I admit this fascinated me.

Where did you get this? It looks copy and pasted.

Interesting.

Examine your assumptions.

Why would you think it was God who was the insane one?

I think the main assumption was that Eternal Time is Insanity. A brain certainly couldn't handle that without forgetting.

I always thought that Time is Death, and I suppose that Endless Time Never Dies, so then Endless Death Never Dies; its very own nature is denying from itself. Quite a conundrum, a paradox to drive any sentient being (in our image and likeness, rather than just similar in some aspects) Insane.

I wrote it and saved it in my Gmail account (Some of the Gmail page stuff got copied over by accident), but yes, this was something that haunted me for
a long time before I lost my faith. I am still interested in speculating about it (the what-ifs).

Hmm, probaly because I would not kill whole cities, including men, women, children, and evel livestock who are innocent, claim to love someone and at the same time threaten them with eternal torture, murder/eternally torture someone because they are gay, have people killed because they worked on Sunday.....

Check http://evilbible.com , read a couple of those pages, then come back and let me know if all of that are the actions of a sane, rational, and benevolent entity.

How one describes the god in the bible is a direct look into a brain state. God didn't destroy any cities. Describing god as all "malice" is silliness.

also, literal bible is silly. if you pack to many people around a volcano that is about to blow and get wiped out that's a people problem not a god problem. blaming it on god is a mental issue, not a god issue.

But, if you look at how wars are fought you can clearly see how people would assign some of the same traits to god. Killing every single person and food source of an apposing army is a tactic. you may not like it, but killing the children of the parents you just killed kind of relieves some of the future backlash.

Because you "wouldn't", doesn't mean liquidation of a town or village along ones boarders isn't an option for the security of one's own people's. your opinion isn't the end all. the safety of one's people is.

also the word "city", city's were not that big.

What it DOES is express the VIEWS of some people with some clearly irrational views ABOUT God. I think they suffered a form of insanity.

Nah. The Op's views are quite rational. He's quite right about the Garden of Eden story being rigged. That was clearly a malicious act of evil. Just creating the tree of knowledge in the first place, then putting the innocents there and TELLING them about the tree .... ! Such a set up. Only a wicked being would do such a thing, and then, to add insult to injury, he blames the innocents!

true fundy reading and thinking. You atheist have so much more in common with fundamental Christianity then you even realize.
