The point is a good one, and that the writers did not seem to understand that the treasury donations were set prices for sin -offerings and thought in terms of passing round the collection - plate at services and reminding the poor (which their flock tended to attract back then) that they were never too poor to hand over to the church every scrap of cash they had.
But Jesus ((for SOA supposing he said it) recognised that you can't get blood out of a stone. Some of those purporting to teach in His Name seem to have a different Interpretation in their "Ghost Bible"
"He looked up and saw the rich putting their gift into the treasury; and he said unto those that were there listening unto him "How generously these worthy men give of their plenty and thusly show that they are worthy of the Kingdom of heaven, and by rights of the earth, too, for their riches show how much God loves them more than others". And he saw a poor woman put in two copper coins, and he said:
"See how this woman cheats God of His due fee. I tell you, if she were employed by the Temple and acted so, she would be out on her ear this time tomorrow."
And those who were about him and listening to his words asked of him:
"But Lord, if she has no more money, how should she put into the Temple -offering any more than she has?" And he saithed right back to them:
"With God, all things are possible."
