What do you think of this essay on pride?

I think anyone can identify with this issue, whether you are religious or not. Even if you think that pride or arrogance is some kind of virtue.

Chuck Colson said that hearing this was the thing that converted him to Christianity after he was sentenced to prison. It might be easy to look down upon criminals, but I think they have a clear way of looking at things due to their humiliated state.

I don't think anyone should have a problem with Lewis being too religious. He is more liberal theologically than most Christians today, and on the verge of being a Universalist. He always acknowledged George MacDonald.

Why follow CS Lewis, Chuck Colson, and George MacDonald? Can't you think for yourself?

It’s hard to look down on criminals when they are knocking you in the head
We really don’t want to look at them at all
Of course cs Lewis is talking about reformed criminals which are in great scarcity

There are people I admire who express the opposite. Such as Christopher Hitchens. He seemed to take pride in his own intellect and arrogance. And I have to think that he would have been familiar with some of CS Lewis's writings. I admired Hitchens as much as any of his fans did, but this is an area where it seems like there might be a difference of opinion.

I enjoyed the Narnia series. And the Screwtape Letters.

I enjoyed those too, and the 'Perelandra' series. But, as a non -believer in those days, I was aware of the Christian propaganda going on. I was uncomfortably away of a LOT of well poisoning going on, not to mentiona good deal of logical fallacy and some hypocrisy.

I didn't get to grips with his apologetics until later on, but cunning and persuasive though it might seem, it is false. Perhaps the most classic fallacy of his is 'Lord Liar or Lunatic' (fallacy of the undistributed middle - as well as pre-empting the evidence) as Anthony Flew's classic of the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy (which as 'No Real Christian' is an apologetics favourite.

He is one of a long string of apologists, polemicists and propagandists for Jesus from Blaise Pascal to Josh McDowell, and all have failed to stand up to scrutiny. The arguments of the doubters have.

My question is more about the issue of Pride itself. And how Christianity honors the virtue of Humility.

Christianity oppresses self worth. One of the reasons I started questioning the validity of the religion was due to my not accepting the dogma that I’m worthless and achieve nothing as an individual. Humility has its place, but so does confidence in oneself.
