They did. That is why we know the trinity is probably a late 2nd century invention as that is when the problems started. Problems that would lead to the Arian crisis 100 years later.

Right now, on this small, blue planet called Earth, we ARE the gods.
We have to consider that it could be somewhat chaotic, and trusting that God has it all in hand means that there is no hope of bringing order out of chaos.
A good deal of progress has actually been made and a human social system (not a religious one that grabs the credit for anything good that comes out of it) is what the world (in general, more or less) uses.
Yet it is far from perfect and needs a lot of improvement. Religion is not the answer and never has been. I could be wrong, but I see the hope as less religion and more rationality. I know a lot of people won't care for that.
Religion defines one’s relationship with that which one understands as a higher power or supernatural state. Members of each religion rely upon inspired scribes who can only write down what they understand or comprehend, thus are limited by their own language, experience and knowledge. No one is dismissing the inspiration, nor the lofty goal of sublime morality, but remember to excuse the factual accuracy of such writings, when transcribing that which is, by definition, about the supernatural or metaphysical nondimensional timeless realm of pure thought.

No REAL Christian would ever teach a trinity. Just because one calls themselves-Christian, doesn't make it true, even Jesus warned of that( Matthew 7:21-23)----God is one-YHVH(Jehovah)=the Father.
