Does anyone know a psychological explanation for this?
I do not necessarily mean in church (it is easy to conclude why people feel the placebo there). I mean "born agains" who claim to feel it randomly for the first time when trying to convert.
Is it because they've filled their mind with the bible, and they are subconsciously expecting the overwhelming experience of being "filled with the spirit"?
My thoughts on the Holy Spirit experience: it's a subjective emotional high that someone deep into Jesus-love get when their endorphins start pouring out like a spilled sack of beans. People have been put into MRI machines and told to pray and the neoroscientists can actually pinpoint the different centers of the brain having to do with religious experience. This factoid should come as no surprise to anyone outside the Christian experience:
Scientists Find Religion Triggers Same Area of Brain as Sex, Drugs and Love
People often mistake that kind of "rush" for the Spirit. A much more convincing feeling is that "aha!" moment when you realize the value of love as basis for living.
holy spirit, chi, stream of desires, spirit of the wolf, dreamtime, awe, its all the same. Sometime i think i can feel the force. Then I think of all those biomechanical machines in me running away in there, photon density, neutrino density, and possibility dark matter stuff, gravity waves, and i realize, wow, they might be right.

You assume regeneration and reformation is all fake ?
That churches are filled with misguided emotional people that are just confused about what makes the world go round ?
That means you think I am where I am today bek I am white and lucky ?
Boy do I hear that a lot
You are probably one of those people that think the prophets should have been given counseling and meds -
And that people that hear God today are nuts
Well pleased to meet you
I think it's about people who were always selfish and self-absorbed their whole lives. Suddenly they see the "light" of starting to think about others, besides just themselves. They don't realize that some people had a more positive experience growing up.
When believers get born again , Jesus will begin to pray for the person where Holy Spirit will go and abide of that persons spirit , so as long as Jesus is praying then Holy Spirit will stay , and if the person blaspheme Holy Spirit then Holy Spirit will complain and God will rebuke the person to get the indifference out ..... Holy Spirit is the spirit of the living God , and He will help develop a person to get the sin out , and He will brings gifts of God and do these gifts through the person , and Holy Spirit will protect the person in the afterlife find their way to heaven .......... Where Psychology is a Art form for natural man , and not needed for Holy Sprit..........
A brain that evolved to see purpose will do just that. Then there is peer pressure, false association of happiness with religious beliefs, wishful thinking, in fact there are a whole range of cognitive biases that play a role in false religious beliefs.

Actually, most of us seem to think that we DO have what may be called an epiphany in greater or less intensity. I think the OP is talking about those who seek a repeat of that experience just as others seek "highs" from chemicals. I see it mostly in the way "charismatics" use music trying to induce the feeling.
