The question stands, why does Jesus cut such a threatening figure.

That just comes from the ten lost tribes. Here is a practical reason why the passion narrative in the gospels is so ridiculous: can we really believe that when Pilate questioned Jesus he hadn't already heard of all these fantastic miracles Jesus was performing----feeding 5000, then 4000 with a couple of loaves and a few fish and making the blind see, curing withered hands, curing the sick and most impressive of all--raising people from the dead?
Are Christians really that naive that they cannot believe Pilate would have offered Jesus a deal to save his life in exchange for raising dead Roman soldiers maimed or killed in battle, as well as feeding whole legions of thousands of soldiers out on the battlefield??????
Pilate, a dedicate procurator to Rome would have realized that with someone like Jesus on Rome's side Rome could conquered the whole world without losing a single man. Not a single soldier would ever have to die again. They would have had an endless supply of food for everybody. No more death, no more disease, no more starvation for the entire empire.
Yet we have not a word of such a deal being offered to Jesus during his interrogations with Pilate. Pilate displays not the slightest bit of interest in getting Jesus on Rome's side. He just frees Barabbas, a known enemy to Rome, and then crucifies the most valuable asset Rome has!!
Can you imagine what would have happened to Pilate when Tiberius heard about it: "You killed a Jew who could raise people from the dead and feed thousands with nothing? Are you out of your mind, you traitorous numbskull?"

It's hard to say just what she is reading...Herod and Pilate are enemies?

given herods house record of cruelty. There is room for speculation.

A good source of info on what Pilate's character was really like comes from Philo of Alexandria and Josephus. They portray Pilate as a ruthless tyrant and....well, read the short article
