My point is that you can't dismiss an entire collection of books (aka the Bible) just by dissecting one small sentence found within one of them, taken out of context. Anyone who attempts to do that just makes himself look foolish.

...but we don't! We have given many, many examples of where the Bible just doesn't cut it historically. It's not just one small sentence.

Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy. There are thousands of posts on this sub-forum dismissing the bible. This isn't about "dissecting one small sentence".
Who cares? Throw those particular books out (if you don't understand their purpose) and your are still left with the majority of the Bible.
The point, Ozzy, in not whether there is truth IN the Bible, but whether it CAN be taken as authority and ANY of the injunctions in it be taken at face value without confirmation in reason and practice of that basis of concern for the well-being of everyone that IS the foundation of what Jesus taught.
It simply can't either on the basis of reason OR that spirit.
As Phet. says, it's the whole thing. taken bit by bit and so much falls apart.
True.
However the bigger aspect of the Bible is the inspiration it gives to readers. That's not something that can just be argued away in these little debates.

If these are "little debates", why do participate?
But yes, the bible can inspire people. But is it always good inspiration? The Koran can inspire people. The Tipitaka can inspire people. The Satanic Bible can inspire people. Hindu scriptures can inspire people. Any religion -- including that of people like Jim Jones and the Westboro Baptist Church -- can inspire people. Black Lives Matter inspires people. The American Nazi Party inspires some people. The KKK inspires some people.
Does the fact that some group inspires some people mean that the group is right?

That's such a ridiculous comparison, I'm not even going to try to answer the question.

It's not a ridiculous comparison - it's apt. You just don't like certain truths.
It might do you well to actually spend some time thinking before you post.
