So, for the sake of "the righteous", countless men, women, children, and animals must be slaughtered. What threat did they represent to "the righteous"?

The threat could have been that a shameful repentant/regretful god who hides his face in dark clouds would not save "the righteous" another way. Truly Incapable. For you see, the people of the valley might have had "iron chariots," not wooden ones, so there was nothing else to do against them but kill the animals to make sure the blood-war magic worked. O.k. I took some liberties with that. But still, when they didn't kill the children and animals as the priest or prophet prescribed, then truly that was the reason for later downfalls. As would be known to the smart priests and prophets, by the basic-goodness in their human nature, at least some of the soldiers were bound to let one or two children and/or animals go in secret. Always an excuse with the false religions, that is why they survive to this day.

Please notice the description of selfish people as described at 2nd Timothy 3:1-5,13.
Even in Noah's day, if the wicked were allowed to continue, they would have killed off all righteous people on Earth.
Earth was Not created for wicked people, but for humble meek people to inherit the Earth as Jesus promised.
So, the threat today is that righteous people will be hated and that hatred will lead to violence - Genesis 6:11; Psalm 11:5.
The coming day of judgement found at Matthew 25:31-33,37,40 is to clear things up to make Earth safe.
Jesus, as Prince of Peace, is the one who will usher in global Peace on Earth among persons of goodwill.

It wasn't rape since there was no "unaccepted copulation" involved. Much like when Zeus has a son by a mortal woman by showering her with golden light (and not with a sex act). Perhaps a more accurate description would be commanded magical impregnation. If Mary accepted the prophecy/command (which the story might suggest she was such a good Jew that she expected this from her God), then it can hardly be called rape... other than by highlighting her possible young age or mental faculty.
