I always love the cherry -picking of the OT to fit what suits them, using the 'Jesus changed everything' argument. This is why I like Jesus teaching that the sabbath didn't matter. This isn't something like ritual cleanliness that you can pick and choose; it's in the commandments and if Jesus taught that it wasn't important (arguably, he taught against the 5th as well) then what's the 10 commandments worth?
You’re forgetting about the Inquisition and the Reformation where they did murder folks...
And they were wrong. They were not following the teachings of the Bible. Don't confuse the actions of men doing their own thing with the commands of God.
What about the Ten Commandments?
Aren't they important, esp since Catholics are accused of removing the 2nd Commandment? (ie wrt Idols)
Evangelicals are very good at pointing that one out, so it must still be relevant.
For what purpose? They tell us what God values, but we are not made righteous in God's eyes by obeying them. The only thing that makes us righteous in the eyes of God is Jesus.
As for being required to obey them, did you realize Jesus spoke on each one of them, telling us to take each a step farther, doing it in faith?
Are you saying they were born evil? Or that they weren't killed or weren't killed by God? My understanding is that God killed the first borns to persuade the pharaoh to let the Israelites go, not to punish the first borns. This would imply that the babies killed were innocent, which is what we would expect of babies.
If all babies are born into sin, as many Christians believe, than all babies are sinful and should be killed before they get old enough to qualify for an eternity in hell. This was the theory Andrea Yates was operating under when she killed her five children.
Andrea Yates knew she would spend her life in prison for her deeds. She expects to reside in hell for eternity herself. Murdering her children was the ultimate sacrifice and the ultimate act of love in her twisted mind.
Because religion twists minds! Attempting to justify killing babies is perhaps just the most obvious example.
No one. God killed them, as was his right to do so. But that was not murder.
Your question is really kind of invalid. The "Old Testament" is valid? It's Scripture, so as God's Word, it's not "invalid".
Having said that, we do not have to follow the Mosaic Law found in the Old Testament, as we are not in that Covenant. God never commanded any Christian today to wipe out the Canaanites and take the promised land. I'm not King David, and God isn't going to use me to kill Goliath.
If you aren't required to follow Mosaic Law, why do you use a book that contains the Old Testament? Why not just use a book with only the New Testament?

Because the OT comes in handy when it comes to bashing gays.
