The Girl Who Joined The Thunders

One time there was a young girl who was very good-looking, yet years passed and she never married.
But at last a handsome young man, a stranger, began to come around and talk to her, and at last she began to like him, and finally she went away with him.
They traveled a long time until they came to a big lake. And here, to her surprise, the man went down into the water, and she was obliged to follow. But once she was beneath the water it did not trouble her at all, it was just like air.
Traveling on, a long way, they at length arrived at a little house where an old woman lived, who scolded the young man, saying, "I told you not to bring her here! She cannot live with us."
But the young man insisted. And they began to live together.
Every morning he would start out to hunt, and return in the evening with a deer on his back. And so things went, for a long time.
But one time the girl woke up at night thinking she saw a great snake in the house. Frightened, she ran out and away.
But the young man follwed and caught her. "Why did you run away?" he asked.
"I saw a big snake in the house," was the answer.
"No. That was no snake," he told her. "That was only my clothes."
The same thing happened several times, until the girl made up her mind to escape.
And so, on her trips for firewood, she would wander away as far as possible, so as to learn the country in order to get away when the time came.
One day she started soon after the young man had set out for the day's hunt, and went a long way before she was discovered. But at last she heard a hissing and a noise like a snake coming. And then the young man appeared.
She told him that she was merely going over to "that hill, to look around," and she went back with him.
The next time she tried it, when she began to hear the hissing noise of the snake coming, she thought of her dream helper, the weasel, and called upon him to save her.
The weasel ran into the snake's mouth and down into his body, where he cut out his heart.
So the girl was able to reach the shore of the water. And when she emerged, the Thunders were waiting for her and carried her up into the air. She never realized, until then, that she had been underwater all this time.
When the Thunders took her up, they rubbed her body. And at every rub, many little snakes dropped from her into the water.
By and by, no more snakes dropped, and she was clean and human again.
The Thunders took her back to her home, and she told the people there what had happened, but she said that she could not stay with them but must live with the Thunders.
"I will tell you how you can tell when I am coming," she said. "When a cloud comes up making a continual rolling or rumbling sound, that is the noise made by my garments."

There’s always something to experience in Cherokee Nation. If you’re looking for some good country music, catch Justin Adams performance at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs in Claremore. In Tahlequah, the Symposium of the American Indian celebrates more than 100 years of higher education at Northeastern State University, featuring a mix of scholarly and cultural presentations along with workshops and an ongoing film series. Also in Tahlequah, view authentic Native American art at the annual Trail of Tears Art Show held at the Cherokee Heritage Center. This show features the works of artists from all federally recognized tribes and is known as the one of the most prestigious multi-tribal shows in the country.
Symposium of the American Indian: Through April 18, Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Okla.
Trail of Tears Art Show: April 18 - May 23, Cherokee Heritage Center, Park Hill, Okla.

20 years today the Murrah Building was bombed by a domestic terrorist. It seems like yesterday. Family that was injured in the bombing have since crossed over.

Took a minute at 9:00 for remembrance.....and pray that never again will we have such an incident......that no one will find such hatred in their hearts....

His son translated for the NASA people: "What are these guys in the big suits doing?"

One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon.

When his son relayed this comment, the Navajo elder got interested and asked if it would be possible to give the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to go get a tape recorder to record the message. The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief.

The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said. The son laughed uproariously, but he refused to translate. So the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They too laughed long and loudly, but refused to translate the elder's message to the moon .

Eventually an official government translator was brought in to help.

After he finally stopped laughing, the translator relayed the message:

"WATCH OUT FOR THESE BASTARDS. THEY HAVE COME TO STEAL YOUR LAND."
Note to self - do not be drinking iced tea when reading Goodpasture's posts! Too funny!! (and unfortunately, true)

Wow, 20 years. I was living in Kentucky when it happened. Were you living in Oklahoma then, Goodpasture? I pray we do not experience anything like this ever again.

I was in Tulsa. I was just starting the one person appraisal practice I currently own. I was at my desk with the TV on CNN when the bomb exploded. I called a first responder that I know in Tulsa to see if there was any help I could give. I was told to make it to the blood bank, so as soon as my wife got out of school (she was a teacher) we went to the red cross.

My dad's double cousin had an office not far from the Murrah Building so I called his home to see if he was all right and found he had been taken to a hospital but had not sustained any life threatening injuries. I let my dad know and went with friends to a prayer service that night. I had a distant cousin in the area but while his office was damaged (glass damage from the concussion) he was not hurt.

For those that are unaware of a double cousin, it is a cousin with the same blood lines as a sibling. In this case my grandfather's sister married my grandmother's brother. Although Uncle was raised in a different family he had all the same grandparents as my dad did. Needless to say we were pretty close. My Uncle, my dad, and my distant cousin have all passed over now. Soon (I think) it will be my turn to cross over. I prayed then and I pray now that I will never see another event like this. Unfortunately in 2001 we saw worse destruction and loss of life, but at least it wasn't a patriotic American who perpetrated it.

My apologies for seeming a bit morose. It's been a long day, I'm tired, and this anniversary has brought a lot of pain back that I though I had eliminated a long time ago..........what kind of man would bomb a day care center and women and men who were simply doing their job to the best of their ability. Tim said he probably would have had second thoughts if he had known the day care was there. If loss of life, any life, was a consideration why didn't he do it on a Sunday morning? No one would have been there. death would have been negligible, and the statement would have been made. I suppose trying to be rational in an irrational act is not too rational, right?

That was a terrible day. It brought the reality of terrorism at a previously-undreamed-of scale - on "home" soil.

And I only use the quotes because I'm Canadian and some Americans might take umbrage. But we share the same continent with the longest undefended border in the world and what hurts you hurts us.

It was a horrible day. I'm sorry for your pain, Goodpasture. It's always more difficult when these terrible things hit close to home. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Guess what?

Got up this morning. Sun was shining. Big fluffy white clouds drifting by. Cardinals outside whistling. Cardinals are good luck, you know. At noon visited the cardiologist. Gradually losing weight. BP is good. Cut one of the many meds I've been hit with for the past year and a half. Got the above ground pool opened up today, and it's almost clear. Shot some pictures in Stillwater.........lots of cute coeds doing their jogging around campus and the lake. Had a burger at Freddies Steakburger Nothing but crap on the radio, but I have about 500 songs on my cell phone, so I plugged it into the car stereo.

Today was a good day.
