I'm a Catholic and go to church every Sunday, so I'm in no way trying put down the Catholic Church. I'm just trying to get an understanding of all this because I feel like all the church keeps doing is asking for money.
Priests like to preach about not being materialistic and all that, but they are constantly asking for money. Every week, we have two collections every Sunday at my church. And on top of that, we may have a third special collection once a month. And then we have an annual appeal from our diocese, of which we are strongly encouraged to give $150 or more. And on top of that, our pastor said that the church is in dire need to roof repairs and the boiler needs to be replaced. That would cost around $2 million, of which he will begin campaigning for in a few months.
I don't understand. I thought church is about praying and deepening our faith with God and not about money. So why does the church always ask for money?
To get back to the actual topic, all organizations have expenses, including churches. There are lots of things to criticize about the Catholic church. For me, personally, this is not one of them.

When it comes to faith in God, money should be green pieces of paper that shouldn't matter. As a result, I expect churches to behave in that way. We should encourage prayer rather than constantly solicit money from church-goers. That is not what the Catholic faith is about...
No matter what they say in Church, it is best to give money to the church, and best that you can tell God ``this giving goes to Jesus Christ``, as Jesus says give and this will ``rebuke the devourer`` which will bring life, give and then put your treasures in heaven .... Just never mind what the church does with their income as long as it is legal

Yes, as a former Catholic, I agree. The collection basket is their operating income, and naturally a more reliable method of collecting is preferable. I remember back when I used to go the men would fight over the opportunity to be an usher so they didn't have to actually pay attention to the mass, staying in the vestibule.

How are you going to pay for the utilities? The ministries?

Our last pastor spent a lot of money on additional statues for the church and a new marble baptismal font, both of which were not needed and probably cost a lot of money. And our new pastor says the parish is dire need of roof repair and a new boiler and so he needs to start a new campaign to raise $2 million.
Why wasn't the money that church had originally used for the roof and the boiler if they were such in bad shape? Why not use the reserve funds for boiler and roof rather than the statues and marble font?
I really wish I can side with the priests, but it just seems like their priorities on money are out of whack...
