Although I am a vegetarian, my husband can't wait to "gobble" up the Turkey from his plate. Yes, I made that awful joke.

Try smaller portions, get extra exercise this week, and try whip cream or yogurt to go with your pie as it likely has less calories than the ice cream. Ice cold water is the best beverage! It is literally part of the cycle of life!

What are you all thankful for?

Me? 2 healthy boys! Just over 1.5 years old and almost half a year old.

Remember no grudges!

I'll be sympathetic to my father.

Remember no politics!

There is a time and place for everything and no one needs to know why their political party is killing America while trying to enjoy family time.

Remember Black Friday is just another shopping day.

There is too much materialism and consumerism in this world, think of what matters best with your extra time off.

All good advice.

I am thankful for a loving wife and stepson, for reasonable health, for being able to be free of debt and while not as flush as I'd prefer, in better shape for something resembling retirement than most can lay claim to. For a vocation I enjoy so much that it's also my avocation. I have had a lot of tragedy in my life and a lot of disappointments, but also a lot of clear "wins" if one wishes to keep score.

This Thanksgiving my wife and stepson have decided to do something non-traditional for the meal. We usually do turkey or ham, but my wife grew up in southern CA and misses good Mexican food; we make a 30 mile round trip for acceptable Mexican here in upstate NY. So they are combining my stepson's chef skills with my wife's love of Mexican food and preparing a pork shoulder roast and various Mexican and Mexican-style dishes around that. My wife has managed to take the week off and they are going to have a great time with it. I only insisted on purchasing a Trader Joe's pumpkin pie for dessert and extracted a promise that I will get my ham for Christmas dinner ;-)

Hope you get your ham mordant!

I am thankful for so many things. My husband of 17 years who does so much for me. My mom who is visiting us for the first time. My two fur-kids who are so precious. My job that for the most part I enjoy and allows us to live without too much stress. My house for keeping us warm and safe. And for the ability to enjoy these things. My ability to recognize that I am very lucky and, well, blessed.

I don't usually celebrate Thanksgiving in the typical American way, but I do have one Thanksgiving tradition -- I sit down on Thanksgiving and decide which charities I wish to send contributions to (for the year) and make out checks and take them down to the post box. Favorites for me lately include Boys Town and a Thai organization that sponsors foster care in Thailand.

Four years ago I died (cardiac and respatory arrest) in what the media called a "Horrific accident" I'm thankful for a second chance at life. I can walk with a cane or use a wheelchair if I'm tired, at least I'm still here.

I’m not a big Thanksgiving dinner person. I don’t dislike it, but I’m definitely not one of those people who salivates over it for weeks.

My wife is working, but my son and I are going to our friends’ home. I’m contributing roasted Brussels sprouts with beef bacon (to accommodate my one friend’s kosher-ish keeping father) and homemade Caesar salad. Of course, if you were joining, I would omit the bacon from the sprouts and anchovies from the salad.

My weight has slowly but steadily crept up this year, to the point that I’m now up 14 pounds from January 1st (and I’m not happy about it). I really need to bite the bullet and commit to Weight Watchers, which has worked for me in the past (and I’ve reactivated my subscription and everything). It just invariably brings out my crazy-obsessive side, although perhaps one sometimes needs to be a little bit crazy and obsessive in order to get weight loss plan results.

I, too, am happy for my beautiful and healthy three-year-old boy. Your older son’s personality will really start to develop over the next year, and it’s such a treat seeing how our children not just resemble us as their parents but develop distinct traits and preferences of their own.

There may be some grudges afoot across my friends’ respective immediate families (both of whom will be present), but I have no dog in any of those fights.

Everyone old enough to form political opinions ranges from conventionally neoliberal to progressive left, so there shouldn’t be any strife in that regard (and I know better than to start any as a guest).

I always sit out Black Friday shopping because I never have my ducks in a row to know what I want to get friends and family for the holidays. Those ideas usually come to fruition over the next several weeks thereafter. I’m not opposed to materialism and consumerism in moderation, as long as you need or have good reason to want (and can responsibly afford) what you’re purchasing. I don’t really buy things for myself around the holidays. I’m mostly focused on what I can provide that will bring a smile to the people in my life I hold near and dear, and I’m usually an excellent gift-giver because I put a lot of thought into the exercise.

Thanks for stopping by and contributing here. I'm thankful too for you, and that you're with us. You've experienced something that makes every day more special, significant, and important than before. May we all share in that awareness, to make every day count more.

Thanks for this thread as no doubt we're all thinking about Thanksgiving in one way or another...

I am so appreciative about so many things, I'm really having trouble narrowing that list down, but no doubt it would begin with family and relatively good health. I don't take any prescription drugs, but about the end of last year my doctor started warning me about my elevated blood pressure. My wife and I have always been long walkers, and I was playing basketball up the street, but that fizzled out, so I wasn't doing the kind of exercise I was used to. With the blood pressure warning and me really not wanting to take the BP drugs being recommended, I decided to get serious about doing more exercise, eating and drinking better/less, and yes lots of water. Very glad to say I've finally brought my BP down to normal range again. (I have a monitor at home that I use to check fairly often). Then come the holidays and all manner of what sets me back along these lines and ultimately that seesaw battle will never end...

We'll be driving to the home of my son and his newly minted wife for Thanksgiving this year. Our second child, daughter, will be there too. We'll be returning their dogs that we have been "baby-sitting" for almost two weeks now. To help us get our "doggie fix" that we've mostly been without since our beloved dog died on New Year's Day this year. Those two dogs plus our daughter's will make three with us for Thanksgiving this year. You could say they have become important loved members of the family too.

Funny now that I'm thinking about the cooking, I never do any for Thanksgiving. I've always enjoyed cooking and I do quite a bit of it, but for some reason it's always my wife who takes over for Thanksgiving (even though she's a vegetarian). She is actually making her famous tasty pumpkin soup at the moment. As part of our contribution for the Thanksgiving meal. We've weaned ourselves from turkey over the years, because although there are a few of us who like turkey dinners, it seems chicken and other dishes are preferred anymore.

All of us lean pretty heavily in the more liberal direction, so we don't have much trouble talking politics generally speaking. We're more apt to play games rather than talk politics however, so nothing to worry about along those lines. No grudges to speak of either. I'd like to think I've been able to do fairly well talking politics with conservatives too, but I haven't had much occasion for that lately. With some conservatives, however, I've known better than to scratch that itch with them. Not all but some.

Shopping? I avoid all shopping as best I am able and by all means I won't go anywhere near a store during the likes of Black Friday. No thank you!

Here's to really good gobble gobbles for everyone, and to make the most of all we DO have to be thankful for! Cheers!

Ah! Mexican! I'm a huge fan and very grateful to have enjoyed many a great Mexican restaurant that we have in abundance here in California. Plenty here in our home town too. I like to cook hispanic meals as well. I'm known for making a mean burrito, street tacos "authenticos," huevos rancheros. My chili rellenos are pretty tasty too if I may say so myself. A family favorite but they are a little much to prepare other than for special occasions now and then. I've always got some cilantro growing in my garden. A must for all these dishes...

I admire what seems to be a very good outlook on your part despite the tragedies you have had to endure and that apparently you are still being challenged with. All the very best to you and yours.

Family, freedom, good food and a good life

Some people like to see that we as atheists cannot be thankful because we do not believe in a god. Now true, we are not thankful TO GOD for anything, but we still have an outlook of thankfulness and gratitude to people and to life in general. Many of us Atheists are truly grateful people.
There is much for which to be thankful.

It is going to suck because this will be our first Thanksgiving without both my mom and my mother in law.
But we must appreciate who we have

100% Agree. I generally hate politics and will not even waste time on it anymore

BUT WAIT Black Friday is FUN!!!!! Now yes, there is too much consumerism and too much materialism, but Black Friday has become more about ENTERTAINMENT for my son and myself than about buying stuff we do not want or need. We go out and sometimes come home with very little. This year our challenge is to find charitable gifts and curb all impulse spending

Check out my post on the shopping thread about Black Friday It started with me as entertainment then morphed to pure spite when it was no longer entertaining, then became entertaining but in a less material way. although, I have one long time friend in Texas that still hates that I do it, and so there is the spite/entertainment aspect.

There is no material item I must have. As for gifts, if I cannot wear it , drink it , or eat it, then I do not want it. And since my new weight loss program, which has taken off nearly 25 lbs with 13 to go, I do not drink much alcohol. In fact, I can get ill from it And eating, well, I do not eat as much, so that prevents over eating.
