This question isn't specific to any religion, but if you are a believer in some religion, what do you think happens to those humans who lived before your religion existed? What about those lived after, but were never exposed to your religion (natives in areas before colonization, current isolated tribes for example)? What about the other human like species that lived before your religion, such as the Neanderthals?
They were taken to an unspecified planet until the transition time, then brought back and sorted out We of course have those details at our disposal, so we can answer conclusively (wink).
I don't think there was any time "before religion" as long as humans have existed. The fact that we're limited creatures both in knowledge and life span has led us to seek connection with something greater than ourselves - I would propose ever since we became humans.
Now if you want to talk theology, each sect will have its own interpretation of the fate of those who went before. You'll have to research the variety of beliefs on that. If we consider the major world religions
Judaism
Christianity -
Islam - Sufi
Islam - Shia
Islam - Sunni
Buddhism - Theravada
Buddhsim - Mahayana
Buddhism - Tibetan
Hindu
Confucian
Shinto
and others,
you can see that there are likely to be a couple hundred different theological perspectives on that. Heck, I think Christianity by itself incorporate a couple hundred different sects and sub-sects, each with its own interpretation of the question.

The gospel was preached to the dead.
Everybody is already saved, but mere salvation is for suckers. The scriotures about hell are only refereing to the outer court of Gentiles called the outer court of darkness. The court of outer darkness STILL HAS SAVED PEOPLE, there is STILL the alter of
burnt offerings within the court for salvation.
Jesus was akwzys speaking of the Zoe kingdom of heaven, he was always showing the difference between the people in the outer court kingdom against the backdrop of The people in the Zoe Kingdom of abundant life and the word for this abundant life is " Zoe Life." THE HIGHEST KINGDOM.
There are two words for life, the first is life with great reward found in the Holy place where the alter of incense is, where the bread of God is there for consuming 12 loaves of God. The teachings of God which is learned under the light of God streaming from the menorah of God in the holy place where life is, unfortunately, one must become Israel before he can step foot withib the holy place. Outside before the veil of the Holy place, there reads a huge sign saying," No Gentiles past this point."
I worship God, the Creator of the universe. The Scriptures I use contain the accounts of his interactions with man. There never was a "before".
As for after? God has decided that he'd save some. He chooses whom he wishes to save. The rest are punished according to their sin. The ones God wishes to save, he will grant them faith in Jesus.
Jehovah says He has made Himself known, so there is no excuse.
