I'll admit upfront that this is going to sound like a really petty question but I've got to be honest, when I see videos of hundreds of people in a congregation all waving their arms in the air in a swaying motion with that expression of joy on their faces it just makes me wince. It's kind of like the wave at a football game (that's when one section of the stadium stands up and throws up their arms and then sit back down again and then it moves over to the next section and works its way around the whole crowd) except they just won't quit. Is there any way we can make them stop doing that? My apologies in advance to any of my religious friends who are afflicted with this behavior.

It's a way of expressing submission to God.

Honestly? I think a lot of people probably do it because they see others do it.

In some churches it is called a "wave offering," whatever the hell that means.

Eh, it's natural human behavior.

I prefer to have my arms dangling from my shoulders unless they have some task they're supposed to be doing like washing my hair or getting a beer out of the refrigerator.

I was dragged to a church once that did that and it freaked me out! I'd guess it's more of a cultural thing, like talking in tounges, "laying on of hands", falling on the floor, etc.

Guess you never saw the cartwheels and flying drop kicks, huh? Imagine being in the front pew and a brother behind you "catches the spirit." Instant whiplash!

Kind of...but not quite. Tongues is a doctrinal thing. You see that in a pentecostal type church.

Laying on of hands could almost be considered doctrinal--but there is more scriptural support for the idea.

The waiving of the hands in the air is pretty much purely cultural. It's expressing submission or praise to God. In some cultures it would be meaningless. I certainly never did it as a catholic growing up, but now in my Evangelical church I tend to raise a hand or two up for certain songs.
