Tom Hanks may be one of the best actors in history, but the real Tom Hanks is an entirely different man altogether. He made headlines today calling Mormons “un-American” because they actively supported Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
As near as I can tell he was calling out the obvious support of the church hierarchy which resulted in the actions by general members described earlier. I don’t see that he stereotyped all LDS as conforming to the leaders that encourage such activity. The simple fact that encouraging such action based only on religious perceptions IS “unAmerican” and should be called out, especially by LDS that haven’t swallowed the poison.

Whatever. The vast majority of LDS Americans did not do as they were "encouraged" to do by their leaders, and some of us are very strong LGBT allies, despite having apparently swallowed the so-called "poison" of Mormonism. Basically, what Tom Hanks was saying was that it is "unAmerican" to be opposed to gay marriage. It may very well be uncompassionate and uninformed, but there is no direct correlation between being uncompassionate and uninformed and being unAmerican. The fact that he later retracted his statement, saying, "...everyone has a right to vote their conscience – nothing could be more American," is pretty much an admission that he was, in fact, out of line.his remarks were, in fact, out of line.
The “poison” I mentioned is religion based prejudice against gays, and what is “unAmerican” is supporting legislation based only on that perception. And if Hanks backed off of that position I sure won’t. Please read more carefully.
