I was just reading a story on the news about the Vatican's opposition to Obama's changes in American policy regarding groups that perform abortions. Here's the link:http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/01/28/obama-vatican-clash-abortion/ (broken link)

I think there are other issues that should be considered besides abortion. Many of the nations in Africa are in the top ten in terms of the fastest growing populations but they are also suffering from AIDS, famine, war, and many other problems that they are unable to deal with. It's simplistic to say that this is just an issue about abortion. The Republicans cut off any funding to any international group that provided abortions but it ignored the benefits of family planning, birth control and education that nations in Africa desperately need in order to control their population and sustain a reasonable quality of life. Many parents in Africa have died from AIDS and left children who have no one to care for them in miserable circumstances. If the populations of African nations could be educated about birth control they wouldn't even need to get an abortion. No one wants to have abortions and individuals who are pro-choice aren't promoting abortions. It's my opinion that this is one subject that conservative religious and political groups just don't get. The idea is to educate people so they don't get into a situation in which they even need to consider an abortion.

Perhaps United States policy isn't dependent on what the Vatican thinks? I know, this is a crazy notion. But it popped into my head all of a sudden, and now--despite Fox News--I can't get rid of it!
I agree with you. There are more important issues that need to be dealt with than something as menial as what a woman does with her body. It would be better if they focused on issues like making the missionaries in Africa give the natives condoms and a good sex education rather than giving them religion. The many wars, genocides, poverty, homelessness and people dying of world hunger seem to be much bigger issues to deal with than prohibiting a woman's right to choose. Anti choice groups don't seem to be able to comprehend the fact that pro choice doesn't mean pro abortion, it just means legalizing abortion and giving someone an adequate sex education and easy access to contraception.
