One possible reason they had long life spans was in order to have many children. It's also my opinion that the effects of age were probably slower then than now. For example, Adam at 300 was probably more like us at 30. There were many long life spans recorded in the bible up until the time of Noah.

Now, some folks say God limited mankind to 120 yrs of life at that point. I happen to think he gave Noah 120 yrs to complete the ark. It's not worth bickering over and I'm not dogmatic about it. However, the life spans drop off steeply after Noah's flood.

My personal belief is a combination of changes in the earth's environment following the global flood and degredation of genetic information over time. Both of those reasons of course are ultimately the result of sin. Not just simply Adam & Eve's sin, but the sin committed by everyone after them. It's an accumulated effect.

We're all responsible for our own behavior and can't blame our sin on ancient ancestors. They may be the reason sin entered the creation in the first place, but mankind is plenty capable of sinning all on their own.
Well it's impossibilities like this live forever nonsense, or to 900 years that soured me on the bible...None of it makes any sense. You say the reason for such a long life span is to produce more children. If that were so and not a fable we'd probably have a hard time today finding a place to stand because of overcrowding. Mankind today lives longer than ever thanks to advances in medical science. That in itself contributes to overpopulation.

Medicine allows us to live longer than those in the near past, but not as long as Adam or even Noah

The Earth would be capable of sustaining everyone if people were not greedy or selfish or a whole host of other negative adjectives. From my perspective, at the time of Adam & Eve, earth was a paradise, meaning probably no deserts and abundant in food. That has changed obviously. Even so, with modern farming and transport, there's food enough to go around, it's getting it to those who need it that causes problems.

Plus, there's plenty of living space available all over the world. It's not like we're standing one on top of another. Yes, some cities or areas are considered overcrowded, but if mankind would just join together to fix those issues, build better housing, plan responsibly for future growth, etc., it wouldn't exist. But then again, that would be close to "utopia" which mankind will never achieve on their own.

"probably" = speculation, not evidence.

Adam, if there was an Adam probably lived no more than 40 years..A life span similar to those living in primitive places...That is if he was lucky and wasn't lunch for some predator.

Well, up to a point. If people lived 900 years and did not have access to advanced technology and agriculture, the only way to avoid overpopulation and famines would be heavy birth control.

Oh, and about God saying "If you eat that fruit you will die" - he was talking spiritiually as well as physically.
Well, as long as being punished anyway because Adam and Eve ate that fruit I think I should be entitled to eat a bowl of it to see what all the fuss is about.

It clearly says, to God a day is 1000 years so man never has lived more than one day sense eating of the tree of knowledge of good an evil.Herblist will tell you that the antidote to any posionous plant is within 6 foot of each other.The tree of life held the antidote to death.It didnot rain on the earth till the day Noah went into the ark.People got there water from the earth.After the flood the lifespan of man shorten, in a perfect decay curve to 70 years,at the time of king David.What happened at the time of the flood that caused mans lifespan to shorten all over the world at about the same rate?Simple,radiation,invisble fire,once the water begin to evaporate an it started raining on the earth it was contaminated with radiation, going into all plants an animals an humans causing a atomic expolsion of free radicals in our bodies excelerating the ageing process.Carbon 14 dating proves this by saying dinosours are millions of years old by the small amount radioactive carbon 14 in there bones.Before the flood there was little radioactive carbon 14 on the earth.The dinosaurs had little radiation in there bones making them seem like they lived millions of years ago.Scientist know the half life of carbon 14 is 3750 years,not taking into account that before the flood there was little if any carbon 14 in the food supply making the dinosaurs appear much older than they are.The oxidation level also increased after the flood causing much more damage to the dna of the cells.The radiation builts up in our bodies, causing the cascanding or chain reaction of free radicals.Our antioxidate level is not high enough to stop the chain reaction like it is when were young.At 40 to 60 people begin to age at a very fast rate due to the 3 billion free radical going thru there bodies everyday.Noah drank wine after the flood helping him to live another 350 years after the flood.It took 100s of years for the rain to cotaminate the earths crust an food supply with deadly radiation.The Bible says that a mist came up from the earth an watered the earth before the flood . We call this dew.
