I read some books from NT historians (liberal and conservative). They said that there are a few facts that virtually all historical scholars agree upon (confirmed by extrabiblical sources) concerning the resurrection of Jesus. 1) Jesus was crucified under pontius pilate for the charge of claiming to be the messiah 2) His following did not die out, but grew 3) There was an empty tomb (though the reason it was empty is, obviously, up for debate) 4) His followers claimed that he bodily was raised from the dead.
Apart from the claim that he actually did rise from the dead, what are some other theories out there explaining the circumstances of this issue historically?
Well, the buy bull expressly mentions pontius pilate, that doesn't mean he really had anything to do with anything, he was ....governor???...... (proper terminology??) of the region for a while, but, in spite of the Romans keeping meticulous records, there is no mention of Jeezus at all. This is perhaps why, when taking a couple of courses taught by Jesuits, they seemed to believe that geezus was more of a compilation of two or three different folks, with a healthy dose of exaggeration added. (the whole virgin birth thingy is not a new twist to an old story, and rising from the dead has been used by several much older belief structures, plagiarism is not a modern invention.)

I've yet to hear about any extra biblical sources from the time talk about Jesus any of those 4 points but assuming they are all true then it could be something as simple as someone spreading a rumour that is appealing enough to spread faster than it can be debunked.

Firstly, not "all historical scholors" agree that what you state is a fact at all.
Secondly, there is no archival evidence from the time of christ's alleged life to collaberate anything in the bible. Every single non-biblical mention was written well after said alleged life time.
If you check out THE TOMB OF GOD: The Body of Jesus and the Solution to a 2,000-Year-Old Mystery (R. Andrews & P. Schellenberger, Little, Brown & Co., 1996, ISBN 0-316-04275-7) you'll learn that the actual, physical body of Jesus was taken from Palestine by his own disciples who survived the war with Rome and re-interred in--of all places--the south of France!
Of course, the "logic" used by the authors, to say nothing of the "clues" they follow to arrive at their surprising conclusion, requires a hefty use of drugs by the reader. But you should still read the book.

LOL, well of course they did!!!!!! It was well recorded that Jesus always wanted to visit the topless beaches along the south of France!!!! If he had any really good taste, he would have wanted the topless beaches in the S. of Spain.
