Thoughts?

probably the same thing that gave stalin or pol pot the ability to commit all the murders in the name of atheism.

It's a cause that unites people and sometimes they do stupid stuff.

thoughts, yes. circular ones, and the circles are narrowing.
and then the suspicion that thoughts that really answer such questions are not welcome at all.

or - that SINCE religions have become such a conducive outlet - i stop bothering with them.

remains the issue with people who may have once been your friends.

One key difference I often see, however, at least in groups fringed on Christianity is that the always seem to have a Bible in hand or a few verses to back up their wild claims. They might have it all wrong, misinterpret it, apply it incorrectly, but they often have a verse or two to justify their actions. What is surprising is that even Black supremacist groups, often tied to Islam will quote bible verses to support their claims when it suits them.

Some atheists will have their own sick ideas but they are not confusing it with the Bible or Koran as far as I know. They are not holding some "holy book" in one hand while pounding their fist on a podium.

Dusty, what? you are not...?

words do have a pull to them. up or downward. one can be supportive, even with sharp criticism, or foster this seeming politeness masking an unclear or hidden agenda. taken to the extreme (which it is by all means), this has been called "fascism with a smiling face" by Erich Fromm back in the fifties already.

i hate the thought re-appearing in my mind when i run into utter depression!

They've got their own secular manifestos though, like "spread the wealth" around, etc.

They didn't do what they did "in the name of atheism". Please, do a little research before making such insubstantiated claims.
