Religion Is Declining In America According To A New Study
I was just reading a news report about a large study of religious trends in the United States. Here's the link: It states that people who don't have a religion has risen to 15% and that virtually all of the major religious sects have declined in recent years, some quite significantly. I noticed in reading the article that they didn't give any information for people who identified themselves as atheists or agnostics so they obviously make up a portion of that 15% but there's probably also a large number of individuals who just don't have any interest in religion but don't call themselves atheists.

Good. May our numbers continue to rise, and may logic and reason increase with it.

to the OP:
this should not come as a surprise. neither is it indicative of people less relying on hearsay, beliefs, superstition, opinions rather than thinking (for) themselves ...

to the YP:
No surprise; as a religious man, I could be an observable social phenomenon or better reduced per reducing my own detachable objectivity for the aforesaid sociology in Progress of knowledge. I remain optomistic.

A positive trend, but beliefs die hard. It will probably take decades before the number of non-religious people reaches close to 30%. Also, as beliefs fade, those who cling to them will only become more radical.

Damn Mystic let me down. lol
Going back to the OP, I do think its interesting that theism is a declining force. Especially considering one of the arguements is Safety in Numbers ("All these other people believe in (insert God or Goddess).. We can't ALL be wrong!").

This is no surprise at all.
In fact, it perfectly aligns with the christian belief system that the numbers of the faithful will drastically dwindle to the point where the Son of Man will return.
Finally, someone's in agreement with the Bible, officially

This hasn't gotten the attention I'd have expected, but I'll be interested to see how the cable news networks handle it tonight...
American Religious Identification Survey 2008
Interesting to note which state seems to have the fewest believers...
