As far as I know the machine gunner was only the philosophical conscience of enjoying the reversal of the fellowman's respect from aggressive anger for the determined enemy to the discriminating Man, the enemy of himself. Wooo.ooh, the man's has got a gun over there: he seems to say I better beware.

Dang bubba, I spent a few years in the Marine corps, knew several machine gunners, nice folks, just had a loud, jarring job.
