I'm a former long term resident of NC. Greensboro is not Salt Lake City. NC is the land of cool people, beautiful girls , amazing vegetation and yes, evangelicals too.

I have been with the Baptists. Charlotte is the land of Billy Graham. They aren't so whacked out as the spiegel screams.

This boy may have been subjected to some evangelism, but it is a little too far and I'm not buying it.

Just how on earth would someone who had never dealt with these kinds of fruitcakes before, know what he was in for??

I think we should be ashamed of this family because their freakiness has given the US a bad name. Some people like this family shouldn't be allowed to breed.

It does conjure up the feelings of Salem's Lot.....a town that has been totally taken over by vampires and when a "real person" who hasn't been "turned" arrives ....... well a feeding frenzy of conversion begins.

This is ashame. Some heads should roll on those in charge of the screening process for these extreme incidents.

I would have turned around and gotten back on the plane.

Actually I'm thinking more of either "Children of the Corn" or the "Dark Secret of Harvest Home" starring Bette Davis

YouTube - The Dark Secret of Harvest Home Trailer (1978)

Again, I would have turned around and run back to the plane.

I know quite a few families that are just as described in that article. Some of them far worse than that. In fact, I grew up in one that would make that host family look like satan-worshippers.

They were just practicing their freedom of religion. That is nothing unusual for a person in North Carolina to say. I think that Christian attitude by so many in our fair state is why North Carolina is a better place to be.

*scratches NC off the list of places to move to*

(P.S. Freedom of religion seems to have become synonymous with "freedom to be a d-bag to others")

They went far beyond "practicing their religion". The host family chose to exploit their role and abuse the trust of the student and his mother, to address their own agenda. It is never acceptable to force your religion onto another....imagine if their child went to India or Japan and the host family forced them to participate in Hindu or Buddhist ceremonies or even to Poland and were forced to attend Catholic Mass. I am sure they wouldnt appreiciate it.

It is one thing to invite the student placed in your home to attend church with you.....it is totally unacceptable to expect and consequate attendance or non attendance. It is also totally unacceptable for a host family to condemn and denigrate the students family. They weren't acting like Christians as far as I am concerned.

I think I would rather fall into a den of theives than a church full of christians.

Stories of crazy host families tormenting exchange students are a dime a dozen -- not only in the US but in other countries as well. That's why when I did my semester abroad, I insisted that my school give me my own apartment. I said, no host family, I don't care how wonderful they are. It took some arm-twisting, but in the end I got my own space and one less crappy issue to worry about.
