That's already starting a little bit in my redneck area. There's a jackass with a digital billboard and the other day it said something about how Atheists are bringing the end times and they should be rooted out and removed from society... Something along those lines.
Wow.. I thought the end times were supposedly going to be a positive experience for the "true" believers?
Seems if atheists were bringing this about they would be ENCOURAGING atheists to become more open in society.
I have been a non-believer at age 7. I refused to believe in the God that my older sisters told me about. One of them even told me I should want to die so that I can go to heaven. Long story, but when I became an adult I was certain that I am an atheist. Now I'm a 52 year old atheist.
The interesting thing is that our numbers are becoming so large, that we are beginning to recognize among ourselves that some of us can have different political viewpoints. Sometimes the opposite, yet still be atheist. Outside atheism there is still a lot of ignorance that we atheists are all left wing socialists. Not necessarily true. There are Ayn Rand-influenced atheists who consider themselves conservatives. There are even atheists who are anti-abortion.
I think we atheists can all agree on one thing about what American politics would be like when America's atheism grows to 30% of the population: The politicians will no longer be pressured to pretend they are religious, for one thing. For another, the Republican Party candidates won't any longer mention social conservative issues, but have to (for once) focus on economic issues. That is, the debate will be between wealth redistribution and private property rights, as it should have been all along.
It's said that the 18 to 25 year old group is 25% atheist. So in a generation when these people go into Congress, you will see the America that I want to see - an end to religion in politics.

It's an interesting question as to why I have become a more evangelical atheist as I got older. It might be that I had other priorities when I was younger or I simply accepted that religion was an integral part of society or maybe there wasn't the in your face evangelism until Billy Graham or I just didn't know how to do it until a decade or so ago or possibly the Internet gave me the wherewithal, or the answer might be that the research had to be done, references collated and the arguments mastered. But actually I think I'm a grumpy old man who just wants attention.

Interesting as it was fundamentalist Christians that were the strongest supporters of the formation of Israel as they believed it would bring about the Return of Jesus(as)
Now they refuse to do the same for the Atheists, sounds very Hypocritical.
Oh, it is ok if the end times are going to be on the other side of the globe, but it is unwanted if it invades your backyard.
Even if you want attention you have still managed to educate and enlighten many of us with your well thought out, intelligent and interesting posts.
I'm really glad the internet has given rise to people like you being able to reach others.
Ta for that. Gives me the chance to say that The Internet, while it may have drawbacks, has been - well it has given my brain a kick - start and a whole new lease of life. Books were good but the way one can just find things out is amazing and I believe I have learned more here from everyone than I could have imagined twenty years ago.
I am likewise very glad that the Internet has made it possible for me to find a community of like minds (atheists), which are as scarce as hens' teeth in these parts. Texas is not exactly a bastion of critical thinking.
