Ireland Takes On the Catholic Church Again. This Time It’s About Schools.

I see why Nozz was so involved in founding the Atheist Ireland foundation.

It's stunning to see that the Roman Catholic Church controls 90 percent of Ireland’s public elementary schools, owning the property and appointing school boards and principals, even though the government pays the bills.
Quote:
Last week, Ireland voted to repeal a constitutional ban on abortion. Almost before that epochal change can sink in, the government is taking steps to end another practice backed by the Catholic Church: a provision that gives preference in most of the country’s elementary schools to children who have been baptized.

Quote:
Many non-Catholic parents, particularly in small towns and rural areas, find they have no choice but to send their children to local schools teaching Catholic faith formation.

Quote:
There have been numerous anecdotal reports in recent years of nonreligious parents baptizing their children merely so they can be sure of avoiding discrimination when it comes time for them to start school.

Even though the US has separation of Church and State, we are not far from becoming such a backwards barbaric country as Ireland is trying to dig it's way out of.

See how important separation of Church and State is? Thank goodness the founding fathers were smart about the dangers of allowing religion to rule the land.

Important note:

This is the Religion and Spirituality forum. We don't discuss Politics, including abortion. This issue certainly has some aspects related to religion. The issue is in Ireland, so the US Constitution is not relevant. We expect all comments to be relevant to Religion or Spirituality, in context to the Opening Post.

Thanks in advance. We really don't want to deal with members who can't follow the rules, and this will be a difficult thread to keep on track.

Religion and politics have always been exactly the same thing. No difference, and I mean that very sincerely.

If politics and people's life are influenced or ruled by religion then yes its appropriate to discuss it here.

The point of my post was to point out how oppressive any country or state that is ruled by religion looks today in the 21st Century.

I was unaware how heavy handed the Roman Catholic church in Ireland is allowed to indoctrinate children and discriminate on children who are not indoctrinated.

The situation in Ireland is a clear indication of the continued oppression and discrimination in modern day society through religion.

The group U2 is from Ireland. Their bass player was the only band member who was not indoctrinated nor was interested in being indoctrinated. It caused a huge rift in the early days of U2. On the tour bus 3 of the band members would be in the back hold bible class while the bass player stayed in the front of the bus and avoided it at all costs.

It's interesting to see how the churches control in Ireland churned out indoctrinated people of all walks of life who discriminated against others who were not indoctrinated.

I think Bono is a bit of a knob and U2 as a band is overrated but that's another topic for another forum.

In this instance, kudos to them for not allowing their differences to mess with their music or friendship.

Non-Catholics have been allowed in schools here for some time, without conforming,or even believing in God. (my kids went through the Catholic high school system very recently, and most friends and families were fairly secular in nature)
Catholic schools are a pretty large percentage of the education system as well, but not to the extent of Ireland.

Yes, totally.

This article says that in Ireland - two out of three voters supported a referendum repealing Ireland’s near-total ban on abortion,

and that in 2015, Ireland became the first western country to approve gay marriage by a popular vote.

Aso Ireland taxpayers are taking on the Catholic Church About Schools allowing more Non-Catholic Children who have not been baptized Catholic because the taxpayers are paying for all of the bills in the Catholic Schools.

The Article states also that "" “It is unfair that a local child of no religion is passed over in favor of a child of religion, living some distance away, for access to their local school,” he said. “Parents should not feel pressured to baptize their child to get access to their local school.”""

The fact is that Ireland was one of the poorest places to live in Europe for almost all of the 20th century..
however, in the 1990s the Irish economy grew larger and burst into life

I believe that the Roman Catholic has long held a strong dominating power over Ireland.
Catholicism has existed in Ireland since the 5th century and arrived from Roman Britain.

However, during the 12th century, a stricter uniformity and government law was enforced in a government Catholic structure called the Synod of Ráth Breasail in 1111 and culminating with the Gregorian Reform which coincided with the Norman invasion of Ireland.

This Catholic structure has held down the citizens and left them in a depression and poverty especially for Irish citizens who are not willing to conform and most of the working class have suffered in poverty from the socialist government that Catholicism always seeks to work under. Socialism is the only government by which The Roman Catholic Church can succeed and dominate.

Moderator edit: Political comments remove. See Post #2.

I believe that the Government funded state church projects an expectation that children be baptized before attending the Catholic Schools - in order to create a roadblock, wedge and an anchor or chain upon the whole system that causes the society to collapse and eat itself alive and fold in upon itself and destroy itself in any attempts to break free of the socialist Roman Catholic Government system.

The Schools mandating that Non-Catholics to become baptized are just one of many, many ways that the Government uses leverage over people. The Government could just as easily start a School for Non-Catholics that was taxpayer funded.

However, the article does not give enough information to make any conclusions - for example in the Catholic Schools, the Non-Catholics who have not been baptized may / or could possibly be creating massive problems for the other Roman Catholic baptized students and Catholic teachers.

There is very little information in the Article to even be considered a headline.
