Has anyone becoming dillusioned with going to church because of the influence of evangelicals in society? I was previously a regular church-goer, and now I find myself so upset with evangelicals, that I am having struggles with how faith fits into my daily life. I feel like evangelicals are saying my faith isn't good enough. I'm also depressed about all the moral value-pushing on me and all of it not matching what I was taught in my own church. I feel beaten down by the zealousness of some. I've been thinking about talking to my minister and finding a way of coming to terms with all my questions and bitterness. Has anyone else ever been conflicted with the fear of not being a "good-enough Christian"?

I'm not sure I'm understanding exactly what has discouraged you? Can you elaborate more?

I'm not a Christian, so I can't comment personally on any changes. Oh I have been to church services with friends from time to time, but I wouldn't be a good judge on things.

That being said, I have one friend who used to pretty regularly attend a main-line protestant church back east and I will relate something hey told me once. The church was what you would probably call pretty white bread and traditional, but certainly not conservative. More country club types I would say. Anyway, the church starting slowly changing. More fundamentalist evangelicals started attending the church. I assume that they worked in the church more because they were more "pumped" about spreading the "word" and their version of Christianity. He said that it started small at first, some people would close their eyes and raise their hands during the service. Eventually people were yelling out in the service and eventually he said the more mainline members were pressured to join in the "festivities." After awhile my friend stopped going. Just too weird for him.

BTW, there was an article in the Economist about this a couple of years ago. I might be able to find it. It was very interesting, especially coming from a European perspective.

If you are disillusioned with church because of evangelicals you were in church for the wrong reasons in the first place. church is for worshipping Jesus Christ and the Father God, not for pleasing or entertainment with the other people

um Lorelei, if you are really a christian you would know that there is no such thing as a good enough Christian. If you read the words of the Christian God, The Bible, you would know it says, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

what exactly have Christian evangelicals done Biblically, not secularly since we are not secular but Christians, that is against the teachings of Gods word. Please site the scripture.

I dont know what evangelicals have done, that would make any believer stop following the word of God to "Do not forsake the assembly of Gods people".

If you are truly a believer, instead of leaving the faith, you encourage the evangelicals to live according to the word of God that you think they are not doing.

how are they doing it worse than non evangelicals, catholics, mainline, fundamentalists?

Moderator cut: deleted/orphaned I am an actual conflicted Christian. I am from a mainline Protestant church who is just feeling kind of weirded out by people who judge me for being to liberal in my Christian beliefs. For example, my church is open to homosexuals attending and we were picketed last year by another church.

Well all your answers are in the Bible and they are very clear especially when it comes to homosexuality, I would suggest that if you are not comfortable that is God trying to tell you something, and you need to seek his wisdom and ask for understanding!

All Christian churches welcome anyone to attend. So I don't know what you mean by "open to homosexuals." All are welcome, but to accept homosexuality, I would question the church because a Bible believing church cannot condone the homosexual lifestyle. Maybe you should seek out a Bible-following church.

The last two responses are actually examples of what is disillusioning me. I happen to agree with my own church. However, I feel like the last two posters are an example of folks from different types of churches. I worry that these churches think I'm a "good enough Christian." The Catholic church across from us was also picketed because they allowed homosexuals to attend without chastizing them. P.S. I'm not homosexual and actually recently voted for a state constitutional ban on homosexual marriages. But, I still didn't like hate-filled people picketed my church or the Catholic church across the street.
