What do you put first, country or your religion ?
We had a situation in NZ where a New Zealander of the Jewish faith decided it was good form to help a couple of Mossadd agents to try and steal NZ passports under the name of a crippled NZ lad.
Now most of us were not too upset with the Mossadd agents who were doing their jobs as ordered by Israeli politicians.
But the New Zealander committed treason for his religion and for that he should swing from a hemp rope.
Then we will give him a fair trial.
So people when push comes to shove which do you choose, your country or your religion ?
Religion. And if I had no religion, "humanity." I suppose really by religion I mean "God and Humanity", well for the purposes of this conversation. Nations mean something, but they don't mean too much to me.
That being said if the Vatican told me to steal government documents I'd need to hear a really compelling reason for it. Stealing is wrong and even if I'm not patriotic I'm also not into hating or hurting nations just for the heck of it.
That is a very good question indeed. Though it not a religion, atheism might well cut across any vestiges of patriotism I may have. I'd certainly find myself siding with Turkish Humanists against British theists.

Both. My first responsibility is to God. But the Bible also says to obey your earthly leaders. I am obeying God if I obey the law. If my country asks me to do something clearly immoral, then my obligation is to God.
I don't have a religion, and this government doesn't deserve one iota of my respect or loyalty. I deal with individuals, and my loyalties lie with specific people, not political abstracts.
Conscience first, then country of course, because religion is an irrelevant construct invented by primitive man in order to help him deal with reality. Someday, it will fizzle out mostly or hopefully completely and the world will be a better place for it.
