A new 'theme park' attraction called Noah's Ark has just opened in Hong Kong (where I live) and I was curious to know what others thought about it and if there is anything similar where you live?

Welcome to Noah's Ark (Hong Kong)

This was project came about with money from one very rich and devoutly christian head of a development company and also with an investment from the government. Yes, the government. It's touted to educate the public in the story of Noah and also in creationism in general. It has been generally derided by the english-language media here - I'm not sure what the Chinese media have said about it (although I'd really like to know!).

It includes such absurdities as a death simulator in which you are shut in a coffin in order to reflect what you'd like to do with your life and of course where you'd like to go afterward. In addition you can watch a movie of 'the moment our earth will be destroyed in the ultimate disaster'. Fun for the whole family.

Now as you might guess I think it's more cr*p than you could shovel with a spade. My guess is it's probably designed in part as an attempt to 'educate' an unsuspecting and credulous Hong Kong public who think they would like to go and have their photo taken next to the big boat and with the cute wooden animals. Most are fairly unlikely to realise where all this originates. If you look at the website (which in itself provides a few mirthful moments) there is absolutely NO mention of anything to do with christianity, god, the bible, creationism, etc.

But that aside, I'm also wondering what christians might think about this since it involves the commodification of christianity. Also I believe the operators are less than forthcoming about what it's all about. If I were a christian this would probably annoy me because it's almost like the operators need to hide their religious beliefs behind a glitzy facade and trick people into going. If they just came out and stated what it really was, I think I'd have a little more respect for them (even though I wouldn't go myself). At least you you aren't essentially tricking people into going!

I am a Christian and I think it is neat. I do agree with your tricking part, I think every attraction should be forthcoming with there motives. Hollywood should have a disclaimer before every movie stating that they don't care what's on the DVD, so long as they get you $20. Or history museums or any classroom that promote evolution and millions of years of lies should just come out with it and say they believe in humanistic materialism and they will not allow another belief in or a devine foot in the door.

Or perhaps they should put up a disclaimer stating that they accept legitimate science and reality.

(Evolution has nothing to do with humanistic materialism btw - any more than gravity does).

OOh, does it have dinosaurs?!?!

The only thing similar here I can think of the is the Creation "Museum", which is basically a hilarious theme park/sideshow/roadside attraction for backwards hillbillies living (and visiting) up in Kentucky.

The Chinese continue to impress

What actually takes the cake is that there are rumours among techie circles that they are working on technology to install a permanent part within modern computers which is intended to combat pornography/political dissidence/clandestine internet activities, like a guidance microchip which can be activated/monitored by the government. They already have a mandatory software on it which was in the news recently.

Microsoft, Dell, IBM etc., are already having goosebumps about this, as this design will be mandated on anyone selling computers in China, which is nearly 1/3 of the world's consumer base. Also given the fact that this is very much China's century.

The Indians will readily follow suit. That's 2/3 of the world's population almost

Think of the marketing possibilities! Today, Noah's Ark Theme Park. Tomorrow, Last Supper Theme Park. After that...who knows? A virtually endless cornucopia of amusement for the whole family!

I also like the Chinese Noah!! But of course...what else would he be.

Regarding the chinese govt attempts to create internet filters...their latest effort 'The Green Dam' was apparently quite laughable - easy to disable or remove. I don't think any government efforts could ever keep pace with the ability of people to invent ways to get around these filters. We remain unaffected by such censorship efforts right now because we have a separate govt (while Beijing calls many shots of course) but some of my friends in China are constantly dropping in and out of contact due to various blanket bans on facebook and other networking sites.

One of the other things that really made me guffaw about this theme park is the 'I & Society Zone' which (grammatical oddities aside) gives visitors the opportunity to express their opinion by voting on a selection of societies hot topics! The funny part you ask? There is essentially no vote in Hong Kong (at least no universal suffrage...they had to put it off due to the 'financial salami', but that's another topic) - meaning the public don't actually get to vote to choose their government here...they are mostly appointed and consist of rich and powerful industry heads.

Creatinism/ID, "true" or not, is religious doctrine, and does not belong in a g'ment institution supported by g'ment funds, ie public school cirriculum. Religious doctrine belongs in churchs, homes, and parochial institutions that are supported by the adherents of that religion.

Evolution is a culmination of hundreds of years of research and peer review by several sciences, cataloging, dating, DNA/RNA mapping, etc to come to the widely accepted conclusion that Evolution is indeed accurate and true.

Evolution is a science, and thus belongs in public school cirriculum.

The Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution forbids the different levels of g'ment from supporting or endorsing religion, a concept supported by our SCOTUS. As Creationism/ID is pure religious doctrine, it is forbidden in US public school cirriculum.
