Since Most Religions Oppose Abortions Why Aren't They Supportive Of Birth Control?

I am not a fan of abortion, (and, I don't think that most people really are, in the arbitrary manner of which many are accused), but, I believe that our best bet is to educate our children and grandchildren in the prevention of pregnancy, (yes, that means birth control), encourage abstinence when they are younger, (sex, after all, is supposed to be for adults, not children), and be supportive of them, should a pregnancy occur. A hateful attitude by the church, concerning birth control, or abortion, doesn't help, (and, as others have mentioned, birth control and abortion have been utilized for thousands of years, so it's not exactly as though Christians have made much progress there, anyway).
I believe that for the church to meddle in the private affairs of their members, (not to mention everyone else), is wrong. It's not the church's place to storm into the bedrooms of our society, and try to prevent folks from having sex between consenting adults, and it's not their place to tell folks whether or not they can utilize abortion, or what kind of birth control they should use, or whether they should even use it.
Personally, even as a former evangelical/fundamentalist, my husband and I used the Pill. Why? Because we didn't want a baker's dozen of children. We only wanted two, and when we had our two, my husband had the "snip and clip" done. Would other Christians have thought that we were wrong for "helping" God along, utilizing both forms of birth control? Probably, but it wasn't their business. Which is the whole point.

How is birth control protecting the unborn? It's not a fetus yet.
I ovulate at least one egg every month. If I don't have intercourse during the "right time" of the month, am I stopping the unborn?
Am I not doing my duty? Should I have married after my first menses, and had intercourse, just to protect the unborn?
Some of you guys are freaking me out!
Sorry - I typed the wrong thing and it didn't make any sense. I meant to say:
How is birth control harming the unborn? It's not a fetus yet.
