I believe that there was a historical Jesus whom the Jesus of the Bible is modeled after, but I believe the stories in the gospels are probably a conflation of tales that originated with any number of itinerant holy men who may or may not have also been claiming to be the Messiah.

Jesus existed and His story is the latest, syncretistic, and most sophisticated God-inspired version of the avatar meme that has existed from our earliest beginnings.

Possibly he was called Paul, and Mark is an allegory of his beliefs and teachings.

The stories about him are taken from many sources, both Jewish and Greek.

There is no reason not to believe he existed today. Again, its more about the magic. Its far easier to say, yeah, he existed, lets talk about the magic stuff. In fact, I can really only think of a a few personality types that need him to be literally true and literally false. And they are not the most healthy type people.
