Well, for one, I don't buy the literal interpretation of the Adam and Eve story.
The struggle between Cain and Abel is best described by the struggle between a farming culture, and a hunter gatherer culture that happened to Humans about 30,000 years ago. There was probably wars that broke out during this change, and that was in fact what this story is telling us.
I've also always said, that perhaps there was a Adam and Eve, but only in a sense. Maybe, these were like tribes. The Adam tribe and the Eve tribe got together, and out of that tribe was born humanity.
Genesis says that Adam lived for hundereds of years, as did Eve. Maybe they are saying a direct lineage to these tribes. Of course we will never find evidence of that, its simply speculation. Most of the stories in the bible have been found to have basis in written history, but the bible stories have usually been greatly generalized, and simplified for ancient people to understand.
