Default Adultery in the bible.

We have the common definition today that adultery is when any married person strays from their marriage.

However, this was not always the case. During the time of Moses, most scholars agree that the definition of "adultery" was a man sleeping with another mans wife, or the wife straying outside of marriage.

Therefore, it was perfectly acceptable for men to stray outside of their marriage, and sleep with whom ever they wanted, as long as they weren't married.

This definition is also a part of the ancient Egyptian definition, and was also the common law in Rome.

Is this fair? Does it shed light on how biblical law doesn't apply to todays peoples? Did we get a better definition from God later on? If so, did the men who strayed under Moses get punished later when we got the better definition?

It is a shining example of how the men who wrote the bible thought of women. Nothing more than property to have sex with. It is disgusting really. One of the things that turned me off to Christianity was the terrible treatment of women and how god didn't seem to mind at all. After all it was the male who was the prized possession. Females made you dirty longer. And were worth a lot less less than males. Nice religion huh.

I sincerely hope you do not look to the Old Testament of the Christian bible for any guidance in morality. The old jewish God Yaweh was a power-mad tyrant who engaged wantonly in genocide and infantacide (see The Passover.) He was jealous, petty, and vindictive, and even punished devout, loyal followers for the sake of a whimsical bet (see Job.)
As far as the old jewish laws: they also said that a woman couldbe stoned for adultery is she ever engaged in sex again even after being widowed. There was also a law proclaiming death to homosexuals.
Other great morality plays in the bible include a man allowing his daughter to be gang-raped by a local mob in order to save a pair of angels (Sodom & Gomorrah)--and a pair of daughters getting their daddy drunk so they could have sex with him (Noah).
You religious fundies need to opne your eyes and use the brain that GOd gave you and understand the Old Testament is by and large a book of fables and allegory and symbolism and poetry, written by dozens of authors over hundreds of years. It's NOT a history book!
Or a law book, either.
I find it sadly ironic that people who take the bible literally actually get LESS enjoyment out of it than do us liberal Christians who understand it to be mostly metaphorical, and thus enjoy it's beauty all the more.
Peace.

It wasn't Noah, it was Lot (same story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the daughters thought that the rest of the world was destroyed, and their mother was gone, so to procreate the race, they got Lot drunk, and then slept with him).

The rest of it, I can partially agree with. I will say that the God of the New Testament is still a lot like the God of the old.

Your world view is both creepy and terrifying, all at the same time.

Tell me moonsun....How many slave women do you have on hand for sex, and where do you live? I didn't think slavery for sex, or any other reason was legal anywhere. Do you also follow all the other ancient laws of the Quran, like stonings, whippings, amputations or beheadings for various transgressions of Islamic law?

That prohibition also included men having sex with divorced women.

Actually God created man and woman equal, man is the one who sinned and treated woman otherwise. Jesus was the first one who stuck up for women. Mary Magdalene, was supposed to be stoned for prostitution(fornication), however by law both the man and woman were to be stoned. They tried to trick Jesus by only bringing Mary. Whoever is without sin, cast the first stone.
