I remember being a kid...
I must have been 5 or 6, and I asked, "If God is everywhere how can that be?"
I remember shooing my arms through the air in an attempt to "feel" God.
How could this bearded white man in white robes be everywhere at once. It didn't make any sense whatsoever.
Right then it occurred to me: there was no God.
Sunday school was horrible, not only was it boring but it didn't make any sense as well. I knew I was being indoctrinated even before I knew what it meant.
My parents stopped going to church soon after for whatever reason, and that was that.
Throughout the rest of my young life, I saw the hypocrisy of Christians, the illogical meanderings of belief, and the ones who'd come door to door looking to convert anyone.
In high school a lot of my friends were Christian. Evangelical. Some spoke in tongues.
I listened to Christian Punk and went to church with them feeling extremely uncomfortable.
It wasn't until college where I majored in Philosophy that I actually came to respect Christians/Religion
I read Aquinas, Anselm, most of the rationalists and Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard who realized that being a Christian was a struggle. A struggle between a man and his God. Not idols.
I respected those thoughts, and those who kept to their own. Who could believe with reverence, but without dogma; the ones that struggled.
It isn't easy to be religious, pious, or even logical all of the time. I appreciate the "hard work" that goes into belief.
In short, I've grown to accept the logical with the illogical. I am not a Christian, but I have become *gasp* open minded about them and other religions. It wasn't easy.

I started another thread about children at least learning Bible stories just to be informed. I think you just proved my point. Educate yourself and do not be ignorant of others views. Understanding others beliefs is knowledge.

What I understood from your post was not that you accepted any particular religion, but you educated yourself in the field of others belief systems.
I also have difficulty of accepting the man with the gray beard in the sky.

And when they believe in fairy tales it provides a great deal of knowledge about the mental agility or lack of it.

Being open minded is a good thing. There are truths in every religion and when you open your mind, those little tidbits of truth can seep in and grow. Take what you want and leave the rest is a good motto to follow with any religion.

"Truth" as you put it above, is as subjective as the individual looking at that "truth".
When fulyl examined using scientific principles, your "truth" falls flat on it's face.
