I know of several department stores that still have elevators so they haven't actually disappeared. I must admit to being confused about the connection between watches, elevators and religion or philosophy though. Maybe you could elaborate.
There's something about watches too. Is a watch respectable anymore for the virtue of planning your own life distinct of the CLOCK?

The department stores I go to, who have over one floor, have elevators. It makes it easy for people in Wheel Chairs, and on crutches. As for watches I think most people over 40 wear them, while about half those under 40 use their cell phones as opposed to watches.
