I am familiar with the nature of cults -- and I don't get my information from YouTube videos.

That said, the particulars of the definition are irrelevant to the fact that the poster to which I was responding defines cults as those religions that don't adhere to his preferred dogma. That's not the definition of a cult. In that context, 'cult' is just a label lazily slapped on any religion someone doesn't like.

What a narrow minded way to look at life, but hey you're free to live as you wish

Truer words were never spoken. The word "cult" is so overused these days as to make it almost meaningless.

"If you believe in it, it is a religion or perhaps 'the' religion; and if you do not care one way or another about it, it is a sect; but if you fear and hate it, it is a cult."

The form of worship (or religion) that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.
- James 1:27

What is narrow minded about Jesus' NEW commandment to have self-sacrificing love for others - John 13:34-35 ?

Obviously I do not fear them or I couldn't do what I do. So that rules out the fear factor for anyone wearing the apostate label. You are free to point out my hate any time you would like.

My comment was not intended to offend you, L8Gr8. The fact remains that the word "cult" is a very slippery one, and has about as many definitions as there are people who use it. I can't think of a single solitary Christian Church in existence that doesn't meet at least a few of the criteria mentioned in your video. As a matter of fact, first century Christianity would have been a classic example of a cult, based upon what your video says a cult is. Personally, I'm not at all fond of the Jehovah's Witnesses I've interacted with on any of the several internet message boards I frequent. I find them to be extremely opinionated, condescending and judgmental and unwilling to even entertain the possibility that they might not be 100% correct in their teachings. Still, when I compare then to groups like Jim Jones' and David Koresh's, I find the word "cult" to be a bit of an exaggeration.

As your "hate" is concerned, maybe that's too strong a word. At any rate, that wasn't my word but the one used by Leo Pfeffer, an American Jewish lawyer, constitutional scholar, and humanist who was active in movement for religious freedom in the United States. It was him that I quoted, and I neglected to give him credit. I think you will admit that you have a rather "strong dislike" for your former church.

Why do we need some book to command us to love another? that's common sense

You realize that followers of other religions feel exactly the same, right? That theirs is the only true religion and the rest are cults. That they have the truth and everyone else is deluded.
