How can one be a Christian and an atheist at the same time,that makes no sense. This is taken from your statement about first Christians.

I also don't understand how you could be both a Christian and an atheist because they have completely opposing beliefs. A Christian by definition believes in God and an atheist does not.

Roman society knew no belief that did not have rituals- if you believed in a god or gods (and everyone did), you attended rituals. Christians had no rituals, so people said they were atheists. Which they weren't, of course.

I think they were being perceived as atheists by others as they had no discernible wear or even a building to worship. It goes to show that God knows the true heart it can't be determined by outer appearance.

It's generally people who want to stand out and seem like they don't have the herd mentality. It's the same thing as people saying, "I'm spiritual, not religious." Ask them what their concept of god is, and you can bet you will find a concept that matches theirs in an already established religion.
Yes, this is the best way to describe it. So there is no difference, it's all in the believer's head.
I see no real difference between the two. It seems to be simply a christian rebranding of religion, with the implication that religion is a hollow shell, devoid of meaning, but a personal relationship is what religion should aspire to.
Pretty much a 'holier than thou' attitude, but in the end, the same belief in an unseen spirit who allegedly created everything, demands worship, and has a unseemly interest in one's sexual activities.
