For theists who think the Universe is only 6,000 years old. A recent discovery has found that Chinese writing is now some 2000 years older than the known universe and predates the great flood and destruction of all humanity by 4000 years. Quite which of noah's sons it was that managed to memorise it all and write it out again after the flood is not known
What method did they use to determine the "age" of these writings?
Their work is based on the 1983-87 excavation of the Jiahu site, which was discovered in 1962. The site has been carbon dated to between 7,000 and 5,800 BC.
The misunderstanding comes from the "knockoff" bibles that were printed in China 2,000 years ago. Like the knockoff movies today the quality was poor and the dates were written incorrectly (translation from Hebrew to the early form of Chinese was an almost impossible task).
The error was caused by the difference in the Sanskrit character for zero. It was so similar to the the Chinese character for "oo" that the Chinese scholars of the time wrote the age of the universe at that time as 1,000 instead of 1,000,000, thus causing the confusion we see today.
An interesting side note: The ancient Chinese character for "ignorance" is almost exactly the same as the modern Chinese character for "Intelligent Design". Go figure...

I don't get it. How could a human system of writing be older than the known universe? The earth itself isn't older than the known universe. Isn't the universe....well, the cosmos which contains all the galaxies?

I saw that article. I didn't think of it in a religious sense at the time, but I couldn't help but laugh at how our Chinese foreign exchange student and her family will receive this news. All I heard about was "China has a 5,000 year history." It was the claim to fame. Now, there are thousands of years more!
Oh, my goodness, I can hear it now -- "See, China has an 8,000 year history!" Of course, within that history there was little accomplished, but I got so tired of hearing, "China has a 5,000 year history." Finally, at one point, I just blurted out, "Well, since America is only several hundred years old, why is it so much more advanced in such a short period of time? With 5,000 years of history, China should have settled on other planets by now!"
Sorry, just had to toss that in there in case anyone else has had experience with the "5,000 year history" mantra!

Ok WCRob!! Get yourself a coffee and let's start again.
Some theists believe that the Universe was created 6000 years ago. Yet we have things, such as the Chinese writings that are 8000 years old, thus proving that theist who believe that the Universe is only 6000 years old, are wrong. The thread title is not meant to imply that the Chinese writing actually existed before the Universe actually existed but is more a sarcastic comment directed at the..............Oh! never mind!! Love on ya dude!!
