A FORMER vicar-general in the archdiocese of Munich has claimed that he was pressurised last month into taking the blame by the then Archbishop of Munich, Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict), concerning the case of a paedophile priest.

Ted, as much as some of your methods irritate me,

keep shining your lamp.

And even if this particular Pope stepped down, there is no one left to replace him that does not share his views. John Paul II did a very thorough job, over his long papacy, of filling the episcopate and the Vatican hierarchy with profoundly authoritarian conservatives like himself, of whom Joseph Ratzinger, Benedict XVI, is only the most visible example.

This seems to be the Vatican’s standard procedure, blame the tail of the snake for what the head is doing. What kind of manager would let his subordinates take the blame for him? I sure don’t think it is what I would look for as a religious leader.

I wonder what makes me think the former vicar-general was pressured rather than pressurized? That would really be overkill.

Seriously, though; can you actually be surprised? Don't you think that every available human being is going to be called upon to take a hit before allowing such a scandal to taint the Pope?
