Under virtually any definition, most Christians everwhere are incredibly ignorant of the real meaning of Scripture. They are guided by their Priests and pastors to read the gospel on a surface level only, and to ignore any possibility of parable within it. What a shame, for Jesus positioned such people 'on the outside', saying that they 'look and look, yet not see ... listen and listen, yet not understand' (Mark 4:11-12). For an introduction to the parabolic meaning of the gospel, what Jesus called 'the secret of the Kingdom of God' (Mark 4:11), a good start is the book 'The Judas Secret' by N Fromings. Without this kind of understanding, Christians are essentially still novices.

That, Toni, is what Bible studies are for. So that people can actually connect to and understand the Bible in the modern world. However, it's entirely someone's choice to go to one, or to even open a Bible in their life (although I would wholeheartedly urge anyone and everyone to study the Bible).

Me too. But people should read it without presuming it's just a simple story - particularly when the gospel itself confirms that it has a deeper, parabolic significance.
