The whole purpose of any religion is to do one thing: mind-control.
However, from religious followers perspective, it is different -- it could be "heavenly loved", "emotionally satisfying" ... that's exactly the types of effects religion seeks: control them when they are not even aware of it.
Then, what can religion do once religion gains control of the followers minds? Many things. For one thing, religion can rob their wallets -- make them bear the entire financial burdens of religion. What do the followers gain from religion? Nothing -- just delusions.
