Default Driving 680 North/80 East and 395 South

What is this drive like?
I only drove to Sacramento once and it was pretty boring to me, how is it past Sacto towards Reno?
I can see that past Sacto, you are in mountain range but how high is the elevation?
Thanks for any input.

You're from the bay area I take it? Yes, the drive from the bay area to sac is really boring. However, going from Sac to Reno is a gorgeous drive through one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. The elevation at the peak is probably 8-9k or so? I'm just guessing so idk.

Donner summit is the highest place along I-80 and it's a little over 7000 ft.

yep donner pass is just over 7000 feet, but IM gonna have to say it's not gonna be a gorgeous drive in the summer, all it is is ugly brown mountains. you gotta go when the snow is still on the mountains, then it's real pretty. Anyways, I would say it's also a boring drive, but come on, what driving is not boring?? I would, however, say that it is an easy drive. But that is cause I just go to Sacramento often cause my best friend lives there, and it really is a short, easy drive. be prepared for the hideous california roads though... with all the studded tires and tire chains needed during the winter, it has left the roads in annoying shape... bump bump bump bump bump bump UGH. Plus, add into this the annoying drivers that DON'T use the left lane for what it is supposed to be used for (passing for those of you that DONT KNOW - even though there are signs posted SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT, and I mean, didn't we learn that in driving school??? ) Anyways I believe this is partially due to their stupidity, but also because the left hand lane has less bumps on it than the right one... lol. well, this turned into quite the little rant didnt it... okay maybe I really do hate that drive more than I have thought...

I don't think its an ugly drive during the summer at all. I just drove it a few days ago. I think people from the area just take it for granted.

Thinking of going to Reno 3rd week in Sept. Getting better airfares to Sacramento and thinking of renting a car and driving from there. How is that drive at that time? Will I be catching any leaf colors, or will it be too early for that?

Also, is there some sort of museum at Donner Pass? Any other interesting sites along the way? I assume about a 2 hour drive, correct?

Thanks.

Nothing like the PCH, you'll be on a regular highway nothing unusual here... the scenery is very nice..

The Donner Museum is at the bottom of Donner Pass in Truckee.

Sacramento to Reno is approx 2 hours depending on Road Construction and traffic.

A nice drive is to jog N. from Sacramento to Hwy 20 in Marysville and then take Hwy 20 East through Grass Valley, Nevada City and connect with I-80 near Nyaak. That is a beautiful drive
